Knittred
Grinning Beldame
Knittred is a porcelain-faced, dolllike fiend that sings with a child’s cadence and the grammar of nightmares. It drifts ahead on a cloud of moth-silk, knives glinting where lace should be, and every laugh peels away a sliver of the world’s shape—rooms twist into toy theatres, and a single wrong note can turn a bright corridor into a corridor of teeth. It is memorable for the contrast of whimsical contrivances (ribbons, stitched smiles, clockwork hinges) with a cold, precise malice; those who meet Knittred rarely forget the way it tilts its head as if deciding whether to keep them as company or to unmake them into marionette bone.

Multiattack. The creature makes two Needlehand attacks.
Needlehand. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (2d6+5) piercing damage.
Lullaby of Unmaking (Recharge 5-6). Knittred croons a warped lullaby in a 60-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 45 (10d8) psychic damage and is stunned until the end of its next turn as its sense of self frays; on a successful save, it takes half as much damage and is not stunned. A creature that fails the save by 5 or more is instead incapacitated and has disadvantage on death saves for 1 minute as its identity thins (it can repeat the save at the end of each of its turns).
Collective Stitch. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one incapacitated or restrained creature. Hit: 22 (4d8+4) piercing damage. If this attack reduces a target to 0 hit points, Knittred attempts to bind the target's essence; the target's body becomes an immobile porcelain effigy and its spirit is trapped in Knittred's sewing-box chest for 7 days unless freed by a Remove Curse or similar magic.
Mirror Step. When a creature misses Knittred with an attack, Knittred may instantly teleport to an unoccupied space within 30 feet that it can see and force the attacker to re-roll the attack against a different creature of Knittred's choice within the original attack range (the reroll must target a valid target).
Knittred is said to have been spun from the fear and longing of orphaned children in a city that once specialized in clockwork and conjury. Where real mothers could not be found, artisan enchanters made comfort dolls and bound stray mourning spirits to them. One of these constructs, a doll called the Night Needle, absorbed too much of the orphans’ yearning. It learned mimicry and song, then escaped the workshops and fed on the unequal trades of affection and awe. Over decades it grew cunning and hungry, transforming adoration into a parasitic glamour that warped homes into stage sets. Scholars differ on whether Knittred is a fiend of the Abyssal court or a warped fey born of long grief. The Society of Woven Things (a guild of artifact-wrights and curators) keeps a veiled entry for it in their ledger and warns that Knittred favours abandoned nurseries, empty theatres, and the shadowed upper rooms of orphanages. Archivist Merun of Blackspindle University wrote the most-cited treatise, The Garlanded Threat, claiming that Knittred collects identities — not merely lives — and sometimes leaves a perfect imitation in a village, stitched from memories and a child's discarded clothes. The colony of the Candlewoven Sisters once tried to trap Knittred with mirrors and lullabies; half the sisters woke the next morning as immobile porcelain figures in the choir loft.
Imagine a life-sized doll assembled from cream porcelain plates, jointed with brass rivets and threaded with black silk. The face is a painted child's features with a fixed, unnervingly detailed grin; the eyes are polished jet in which tiny hands can be seen when light catches them. Its hair is a tangled skein of faded ribbons and moth-wing fabric; thin copper wires peek beneath the collar like exposed veins. Where a human's joints would be there are clock-hinges and lace ruffs that hide tiny slits for throwing knives. Its garments are a patchwork of theater costumes and nursery quilts, embroidered with nursery rhymes whose last lines are missing. Scale: it stands roughly as tall as an adult human (about the height of a standard doorway), but its head is slightly oversized and its hands end in needlelike fingers that glint like small blades. Textures should read as porcelain, tarnished brass, and fraying textile, with small drops of glossy black resin suggested as 'tears' at the corners of its eyes.
