Umbraeth Binder
Shadowfell Enslaver
A tethered mass of living shadow and bone, the Umbraeth Binder is the terror the shadowfel cultists unleash to break wills and extinguish hope. It slinks like smoke given teeth and chains, bending light and sound around its form, dragging victims into cold, whispering dark with a voice like the rustle of dead banners. Where it passes, torches gutter and memories chill; cultists keep one hand on the fetters that bind it, for the Binder's obedience is coerced and brittle—when its chains burn, it becomes a ravenous, vengeful darkness.

Multiattack. The Umbraeth Binder makes three attacks: two Claw attacks and one Umbral Rend.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (1d10+6) slashing damage plus 9 (2d8) necrotic damage as shadow leeches life.
Umbral Rend. Melee or Ranged Spell Attack: +8 to hit, reach 10 ft. or range 60/240 ft., one target. Hit: 27 (6d8) necrotic damage, and the Binder regains hit points equal to half the necrotic damage dealt. If the target is reduced to 0 hit points by this attack, it is pulled into a sliver of the Shadowfell: the target is blinded and restrained until the end of its next turn as cold darkness grips it (the effect ends early if the target succeeds on a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw).
Fetters of Obedience (Recharge 5-6). The Binder exhales a wave of binding pitch-black smoke in a 30-foot cone. Each creature in that area must succeed on a DC 16 Charisma saving throw or be restrained as shadow chains coil about them for 1 minute. A restrained creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success. A creature that fails the save by 5 or more is also frightened for 1 minute (save at end of each of its turns to end). While restrained by this feature, the Binder can spend a bonus action to pull the creature 15 feet toward it.
Shadow Step (Recharge 4-6). When a creature the Binder can see within 60 feet deals damage to it, the Binder can teleport up to 60 feet to an unoccupied space it can see that is in dim light or darkness. The next attack it makes before the end of its turn has advantage.
The Umbraeth Binders are not born but forged: souls torn from the Shadowfell and grafted into husks by the cult known as the Obsidian Fetter. According to the scholar Marrek Vey of Narelen, cultists use a three-night rite to splice a lost spirit into a carved obsidian frame, then chain that frame with runes of domination. The result is a creature bound to obey crude commands and to feed on the fear and life force of the Binder's commanded targets. If the cult fails to feed or reaffirm its hold, the Binder's obedience frays and it seeks any nearby shadow to swell its power. Umbraeth Binders are commonly found in ruined manors, subterranean shrines, and the liminal alleys where the Shadowfell brushes the material world. They prefer stalking from rooftops and reflecting pools, using darkness as both camouflage and food. Rival shadow cults treat Binders as valuable assets or abominations to be destroyed; tales tell of the Nightwardens of Kolvast who once burned an entire warehouse of bound Binders rather than let them fall into demonic hands. A few temples—such as the half-sunken Sanctum of Hraes—are rumored to maintain a single Binder as a doomsday deterrent, its chains woven into the sanctum's wards.
The Umbraeth Binder stands roughly nine to ten feet tall in its most erect aspect but often spreads low like a rolling veil. Its 'body' is a torn cloak of thickness-variable shadow, wrapped about a skeletal core of blackened bone and jagged obsidian shards that serve as anchors for the binding runes. Where bone meets shadow there are glints of iron, small iron fetters rimmed with sigils, always connected by a chain that hums faintly with a violet undertone. Its face is a dark hollowness framed by a crown of broken binding spikes; when it opens that hollow a lightless throat exhales a frost that fogs breath. Textures: the shadow skin appears matte and velvety, the bones are matte black with the sheen of old iron, the chains are pitted and greasy with a residue that smells faintly of ozone and wet paper. Size references: when coiled on a floor it sprawls to the size of a large wagon, and when looming through a doorway it blocks more than half the lintel's height, seeming larger through the absence of light.
