Harrowgourd

Ember Jackling

Harrowgourds are wicked, pocket-sized pumpkins with grinning carved faces and eyes that glow like coal. They skitter on crooked vine-legs between cornstalks, hissing little sparks and spitting brief jets of flame. In a moonlit field their orange hides flare like a thousand tiny bonfires, and the air around them smells of toasted husk and brimstone. A single Harrowgourd is a nuisance; dozens can turn a harvest into an inferno before dawn.

Actions

Tendril. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 4 (1d4+2) bludgeoning damage and the target takes 2 (1d4) fire damage from smoldering vine-edges.

Ember Spout (Recharge 5-6). The Harrowgourd exhales a gout of flame in a 10-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 11 Dexterity saving throw, taking 7 (2d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one.

Lore

Harrowgourds appear where blight and curse touch fertile earth: a smear of demonic oil in a furrow, an oath sworn over a scarecrow, or a hex cast by a spiteful hedge-witch. Farmers tell that the first Harrowgourds were born in a single ruined field called Widdershade Hollow, where a displaced warlock buried his tinderbox with his last crop. Since then, the creatures spread by slipping their seeds into seed-sacks and hitching rides in produce wagons. Scholars of uncanny agriculture—most notably Magister Brel of the Order of Duskwind—have traced small outbreaks to cultists who use Harrowgourds as alarms and distractions. Routes trodden by harvest caravans, abandoned granaries, and ruined earthworks make favored lairs. The creatures feed on rot and ash, gnawing softened kernels and compost; they fear water and densest shade, and foxes or barn cats sometimes learn to herd them toward ponds. Villagers have learned that salt and running water scatter them, while iron tools lop off their vine-legs more permanently.

Appearance

A Harrowgourd is about the size of a clenched fist (roughly 6–8 inches across), with a squat, squat-ribbed pumpkin body. Its skin is mottled orange and scorched black, pitted with shallow, deliberate grooves like a carved face; the carved 'eyes' are hollows that glow with ember-red light and occasionally belch a thin plume of smoke. Instead of a stem it has a twisted, charred tendril that acts like a neck and a mouth with ragged, seed-shell teeth. Four wiry vine-legs sprout asymmetrically from its underside; each leg ends in a hooked, rootlike claw. Fine charcoal dust flakes from its seams when it walks. When still, faint embers crawl beneath cracked seams and small sparks skitter off in the dark.
