Grimbleth

Basement Gaoler

A Grimbleth is a cramped, sinister presence that turns the familiar underside of a house into a hunting ground: it waits in the chill dark beneath floorboards, learning the rhythms of a household before slipping up to drag victims back down into the cold. It is as maddeningly domestic as it is predatory—fingers stained with soot, a voice that imitates pipes and dripping water, and the uncanny habit of rearranging a cellar’s bins to better trap the living.

Actions

Multiattack. The Grimbleth makes two Hook attacks or uses Trap Snare and one Hook attack.

Hook. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8+4) slashing damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or be pulled 10 feet toward the Grimbleth and knocked prone.

Trap Snare (Recharge 5-6). Ranged Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, range 15/30 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (2d6+3) piercing damage, and the target is restrained by spectral ties of old rope for 1 minute. The restrained target can repeat the DC 14 Strength check at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. A Grimbleth can use a bonus action to pull a restrained creature up to 15 feet closer.

Basement Cackle (1/Day). The Grimbleth utters a warped, imitative whisper. Each creature of the Grimbleth's choice within 30 feet that can hear it and isn't in bright light must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened for 1 minute. A frightened creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success. While frightened this way, a creature is compelled to move away from doors and towards enclosed spaces.

Reactions

Slippery Absence. When a creature misses the Grimbleth with a melee attack, the Grimbleth can immediately move up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.

Lore

Grimbleths are said to be born where human craft and neglect meet: the junction of a ruined foundation, a broken hearth, or a house built atop an older, forgotten crypt. Folktales claim they are the stubborn remnants of household curses or the crystallized malice of a long-suppressed grievance, but field scholars remain divided. The Housewrights' Lantern, an urban guild that manages ancient dwellings, keeps terse records of Grimbleth infestations and trains 'cellarbound' crews to seal entrances when a pattern appears. Most Grimbleths stake out one house at a time, sometimes for years. They keep meticulous corner caches of small stolen items—buttons, coins, children's toys—using them as bait or currency with other cellar creatures. Scholar Nurek of the Archive of Hearths once wrote that a Grimbleth will not cross running water and rarely enters churches; instead it clings to the architecture of domestic life and is terrified of sunlight and large open spaces. When confronted, Grimbleths often try to bargain, mimicking a loved one's voice to draw victims alone into the dark.

Appearance

A Grimbleth stands roughly human height but with a hunched, compressed torso that makes it seem too long for its ribs. Its skin is pallid-gray and papery, like damp cardboard stretched over thin frames; fine, blackened veins web the forearms. The hands are long-limbed with tapered, calloused fingers tipped in blunted keratin 'hooks' rather than true nails. Its face is small, almost childlike, with an expressive mouth that can form perfect imitations of a whispered name; eyes are pinprick black orbs sunk deep under a keratin brow ridge. Patches of grime and soot cling to the joints, and it often wears scraps of cloth—stolen smocks, a bent lantern frame—tangled around its waist. When it moves it makes soft clanks, as if small metal implements are wrapped against its bones.
