Ygralith

Eater of Echoes

A hulking, spectral feline whose ribs ripple with a hunger for memory and sound, the Ygralith moves with impossible silence and an appetite that unmans sages as readily as it rends muscle. Wherever it passes, whispers and old songs fall out of the air; victims report a cold silence in their minds as if some part of them was consumed. In combat it ambushes with a terrifying pounce, then opens an otherworldly maw that does not merely tear flesh but tears echoes — leaving survivors hollow, haunted, and difficult to resurrect.

Actions

Multiattack. The Ygralith makes one Bite and two Claw attacks.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 23 (3d10+6) piercing damage.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (2d8+6) slashing damage.

Consume Echo (Recharge 5-6). The Ygralith exhales a low, keening sigh toward one creature it can see within 60 feet. The target must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw or take 45 (10d8) necrotic damage and be unable to regain hit points until it finishes a short or long rest as fragments of its memories are devoured. On a successful save, the target takes half as much damage and suffers no loss of restorative capacity. If this attack reduces a creature to 0 hit points, the Ygralith regains hit points equal to half the necrotic damage dealt.

Reactions

Whisker Riposte. When a creature the Ygralith can see within 10 feet hits it with a melee attack, the Ygralith can use its reaction to make one Claw attack against that creature.

Lore

Tales of the Ygralith come from the cliff-ringed valleys where storms pound the stone and ruins whisper. Shepherds and ruined monasteries speak of a gargantuan cat that came from the shadowed throat of a mountain spring, a thing that feeds not only on flesh but on the impressions creatures leave on the world: songs, oaths, names. The earliest chronicler to sketch one was Isen Hark of the Kevald Archives, who recorded a monastery emptied of choir memory after a single night; the monks could sing no more and claimed the cat had 'licked the syllables from their mouths.' Scholars of the Throatwatch — a guild of xenopsychologists who study predators that feed on non-corporeal sustenance — believe Ygraliths are rarer than stories imply and tightly territorial. A lone Ygralith will claim a hollow wind-swept cirque or a ruined echo-chapel as its lair, dragging the bones of prey into shadowed ledges. Factions like the Throatwatch and a secretive cabal known only as the Broken Cant hold grim techniques to hide names and lull memories to avoid the cat's interest, but contact is dangerous: even the attempt to forget invites the predator's attention.

Appearance

Imagine a cat the size of a war pony, but with proportions stretched and uncanny: long, lithe haunches, a spine that seems to ripple like a low flame, and paws the size of a man's torso. Its fur is black as riverbed stone but not solid—where light touches it, the coat shimmers with thin, concentric waves like ripples on glass. Along the ribs, skin is thinner and veins glow faintly with a blue-white luminescence, as though the animal channels things it has eaten into a slow pulse. The head is broad, ears tall and tufted, and the jaw can unhinge wider than anatomically sensible; the maw's inner throat appears to fold inward like a second mouth lined with tiny tooth-rims. Whiskers are long, hairlike filaments that tremble independently, each tip often holding a faint moted light — the remnants of stolen echoes. Scale reference: the Ygralith crouches low to the ground at roughly the height of a doorway lintel, with a length from nose to tail tip about 12–14 feet.
