Throkesh

Cavern-Scaled Serpent

A coil of many scaled necks and lamp-like eyes, the Throkesh slithers from shadowy grottoes and answers threats with belching embers and snapping maws. Its multiple heads move with independent hunger, darting to bite and blind opponents while a geyser of hot cinder-spray turns narrow cave passages into ovens. Encounters with a Throkesh are chaotic: combatants are forced to dodge mouths, falling rock, and sudden walls of heat as the creature uses the cramped geometry of its lair to turn enemies against one another.

Actions

Multiattack. The creature makes two Bite attacks.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d10+3) piercing damage.

Fiery Spray (Recharge 5-6). The Throkesh exhales a spray of burning embers in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw, taking 18 (4d8) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one.

Reactions

Cinder Lash. When a creature hits the Throkesh with a melee attack, the serpent can unleash a flare of ember from the nearest neck. The attacker must make a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw, taking 7 (2d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. Once the Throkesh uses this reaction, it cannot use it again until the end of its next turn.

Lore

Throkesh are born in deep limestone caves where geothermal seams warm underground streams. Folklore among miners calls them brood-sprites of the earth, though they are neither fey nor elementals; they are a twisted lineage of subterranean serpents that evolved clustered necks and a rudimentary pyrogenic organ to survive flashfires and choking vapors. Clutches of Throkesh are rare — a single female lays a long string of leathery eggs in fissures filled with ember-smoke. Young disperse along underground waterways, leaving telltale singed scales on boulders. Scholars in the city of Hargund documented Throkesh attacks on a narrow mining road in 237 DR, and the guild miner Edda Rom declared that driving one from a tunnel requires smoke and mirrors rather than brute force. The Order of Stonewatch now posts guides for explorers: keep fire at your back, never split a party down a tunnel, and respect a Throkesh's lair. Bands of cave-dwelling kobolds sometimes worship particularly large specimens and herd them toward enemy encampments, while hermit alchemists prize the serpent's cinder-sacs for making incendiary powders.

Appearance

A Throkesh is a mass of 4–6 elongated necks sprouting from a thick, muscular chassis. Each neck ends in a narrow, wolfish head with a gape full of small needle-like teeth and a triangular tongue. The main body is squat and ovoid like a coiled python, covered in overlapping slate-gray scales that darken toward the belly. Along the throat and sides of the necks are rows of heat-hardened nodules—bronze-colored plates that blister and glow faintly when the creature is roused. Tiny, soot-encrusted vents sit under the lower jaws and on either side of the neck base; these are the pyrogenic glands that hiss embers when threatened. At full size a Throkesh is roughly 18 feet long from tail to longest head; an adult can fill a 10-foot-high tunnel with its bulk. Singeing, cinder-streaked scales and curled talons of mineralized saliva give the Throkesh a lived-in, ruinous look.
