Gourdricant

Jack-Gourd Arcanist

A talking watermelon with a carved, flickering jack-o'-lantern for a head, Gourdricants speak with a hollow, papery chuckle as they weave simple magics. They lurch on squat vine-legs, lash glowing tendrils to cast tricks and charms, and prefer to harry travelers with mischievous illusions and sleep-steeped lullabies rather than outright slaughter. Their absurd appearance belies a cunning curiosity: they collect gossip, seeds, and small arcane trinkets, trading up to survive the seasons.

Actions

Multiattack. The Gourdricant makes two Vine Slap attacks.

Vine Slap. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d6+2) bludgeoning damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 11) if the Gourdricant isn't already grappling it. A grappled creature is restrained by the vine until it escapes.

Spellcasting. The Gourdricant is a 2nd-level spellcaster. Its spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 11, +3 to hit with spell attacks). The Gourdricant has the following spells prepared: Cantrips (at will): control flames, mold earth, minor illusion. 1st level (2 slots): sleep, entangle. It regains expended slots when it finishes a long rest.

Pumpkin Glare. Ranged Spell Attack: +3 to hit, range 30 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (2d6) radiant (sickly warm) damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 11 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened until the end of its next turn. If the target is frightened in this way, dim light flickers from its eyes as if reflected by a hollow lantern.

Lore

Gourdricants are the result of autumnal hedge-witchery and the odd alchemy of hedgerow sprites: gourds or melons animated by a leftover charm and a will shaped by barnside stories. They are common in abandoned orchards, ruined gardens, and the margins of old farmlands where rituals of harvest and warding once stood. Farmers tell of a single laughing gourd that would keep the real pests away in exchange for lantern oil and discarded sweets. Scholars of the Order of Verdant Wards record Gourdricants as semi-sentient familiars spun from seasonal rites; Magister Orben of Briarfen wrote the earliest description calling them "cantors of the last harvest." Gourdricants often congregate in small clusters called groves and trade seeds, stories, and stolen candles. They avoid large predators and arcane predators alike, but are known to bargain with hedge-witches, hedge-sorcerers, and the reclusive guild called the Rootbound Censer for protection or new enchantments.

Appearance

A squat, ripe watermelon body roughly the size of a large barrel (about 3 feet across), balanced on four curling, knotted vine-legs. Where a melon stem might sit, a carved pumpkin head has been hollowed and stylized into a grinning jack-o'-lantern; its carved eyes glow with a warm, uneven ember light and a faint translucent mist curls from the mouth. The rind is mottled green with pale stripes, but stitched seams of sap-dark fibers and burlap patches show repairs where magics bind different fruits together. From its shoulders sprout wiry vines tipped with tiny clawed tendrils and a few withered leaves; knobby root nodules cling where its feet meet the ground. Scale reference: roughly knee-high to a human, the head the size of a stout helmet, vines extend to about 6–8 feet when reaching. Textures include glossy melon skin, rough pumpkin rind, coarse burlap patches, and slimy sap along the seams.
