Vengeful Sylvan Guardian
Gorthul is a hulking, foul-mannered giant twisted by long communion with a single ancient tree: it smells of damp rot and sap, and wherever it stomps the undergrowth recoils. It fights not for plunder but for a single patch of earth, roaring with the fury of roots and wind; foes who try to cut down or desecrate that tree find Gorthul arriving with branches crashing and claws that split bark like skin. It is terrifying because it blends crude, brutal strength with uncanny, arboreal tricks — calling roots to trip, throwing thorn-ridden limbs, and flinging sap to glue blades — and it will keep coming so long as a scrap of living wood remains in its sight.

Multiattack. The creature makes two attacks: one Claw and one Bite.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8+3) slashing damage. If the target is a plant creature or occupying difficult terrain composed of plants, the claw attack deals an additional 4 (1d8) slashing damage.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (1d8+3) piercing damage.
Grasping Root (Recharge 5-6). The giant slams its fist into the ground and calls up twisting roots in a 20-foot line that is 5 feet wide. Each creature in the line must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or be restrained by roots. A restrained creature can use an action to make a Strength check against the same DC, ending the effect on itself on a success. A creature that starts its turn restrained by the roots takes 7 (2d6) piercing damage as thorny tendrils bite into it.
Sap Smother. Ranged Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, range 10/30 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6+3) bludgeoning damage and the target is covered in sticky sap. The target's weapon attacks have disadvantage until the start of the giant's next turn unless they spend an action to scrape the sap away (DC 12 Dexterity check).
Regeneration (Trait). Gorthul regains 10 hit points at the start of its turn if it has at least 1 hit point. If Gorthul takes acid or fire damage, this trait doesn't function at the start of its next turn.
Tree's Embrace (Trait). If Gorthul is within 30 feet of a living tree at least 5 feet in diameter, it can use a bonus action to root itself briefly. While rooted, it has advantage on Strength checks and saving throws, and its speed is 0 but it gains temporary hit points equal to 1d10 + its Constitution modifier. Rooted Gorthul can end this effect as a bonus action.
Folk of the rimward hamlets whisper that Gorthul was once a starving hill-giant who stumbled into the bole of the tenebrous oak called the Heart of Kess. Villagers who tried to fell that oak found the axeheads dulled and their hands blistered by resin; nights after, something enormous stalked the tree, growing more bark than flesh. Over decades the giant's rage fused with the tree's slow will until what remained could be called neither wholly plant nor wholly giant. Hunters report that Gorthul seldom wanders far from its grove, preferring to lair in root-choked hollows at the base of its tree. It feeds on carrion and stray beasts, but if hunters threaten the oak it becomes relentless: it knows how to call roots to bind intruders and how to smear sap across armor and weapons. Scholars such as the reclusive druid Hennor of Cliffmire and the antiquarian Matra Voss of Durek's Library have chronicled Gorthul in their notes; Matra insists there is an old bargain written in bark-ink that ties the giant's life to the tree. The cult of the Moss-Threshold, a small sect that reveres living wood, considers Gorthul a terrible avatar and will sometimes attempt to feed offerings to the tree to placate the guardian.
Gorthul stands nearly as tall as a ruined doorway, hulking and asymmetric: one shoulder is a knobby mass of bark and lichen, the other a swollen, sinewy arm. Its skin is the color and texture of damp cedar — deeply grooved, flaking in places into curling moss. Where flesh shows, muscle is scarred and threaded with pale root-like veins that pulse with sap. Its head is broad, jaw overshot, with yellowed, sap-stiffened hair braided with twigs and fungus; one ear is a notch of gnawed bark. Long, cracked nails are blackened and tipped with resin. Vines coil about its waist like a crude belt, and portions of its torso are grafted with plates of bark and knotted wood as if the tree itself lent armor. Scattered thorny barbs and a smear of old, dried sap stain its hands and forearms. For scale: Gorthul reaches chest height to a human standing on a small crate and can fill the width of a standard cottage doorway with its shoulders.
