Gloomwrit Spinneret
Darkwoven Horror
A hulking spider woven from living shadow, the Gloomwrit Spinneret skitters without sound and leaves a smear of void where its legs pass. It spins webs that drink light and bind flesh alike; victims caught in those strands feel the cold, hollow tug of darkness attempting to unmake them. It hunts by erasing edges—blending into gloom, drawing prey close, and striking with venom that chills the blood and saps will.

Multiattack. The Gloomwrit Spinneret makes two Bite attacks.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (2d6+5) piercing damage plus 14 (4d6) poison damage. The target must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned for 1 minute. While poisoned in this way, the target has disadvantage on attack rolls and saving throws. The target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.
Webbing Bolt. Ranged Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, range 30/60 ft., one target. Hit: The target is restrained by webbing (escape DC 13). A Large or smaller creature restrained by the webbing can use its action to make a DC 13 Strength check, bursting the webbing on a success. The webbing burns away after 1 minute. If the webbing is hit with fire, it takes 5 (2d4) fire damage; a single torch deals enough heat to melt a segment, but the Gloomwrit can reweave that strand as an action.
Umbral Spin (Recharge 5-6). The Spinneret ejects a cloud of dark, fibrous smoke in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw, taking 21 (6d6) necrotic damage and becoming blinded until the end of its next turn on a failed save, or half as much damage and not blinded on a successful one. Dim light and darkness in the cone are reduced by one step (dim light becomes darkness, bright light becomes dim) for 1 minute in the area affected.
Folk in the rain-swollen timberlands tell of nights when the fog seems to thicken into a shape with eight long, ink-dark legs. Hunters who pursue game by torchlight sometimes return with their lamplight guttered out and flame extinguished as if a pocket of night had been cut from the world. Scholars of the Umbral Collegium mark the Spinneret as an aberrant predator born where shadow and craft intersected: a failed binding of darkness into material by a desperate weaver-mage. Gloomwrit Spinnerets lair in caverns, ruined mill basements, or the bellies of overturned barges where shadows pool and refuse to lift. They are solitary and patient predators, preferring to spin traps across narrow passes and alleys. The Order of Evenhand once attempted to harvest webs for their light-eating properties; few returned. The hermit naturalist Lorek Venn keeps sketches of Spinneret silk under glass and insists the threads hum faintly when moonlight is pressed to them.
Imagine a spider the size of a draft hound, but its carapace and abdomen look like folded black cloth shot through with faint, oily veins of deeper darkness. Its eight legs are long and jointed, tapering to cruel, ragged tips that seem to fray into wisps of shadow at the ends. The spinneret organs along its rear are knotted, producing webbing that appears matte-black and almost absorbent of light; newly spun threads have a satin sheen but drain brightness from a torch within inches. Its eyes are little pits of dull glass, and where a human might expect mouthparts there is a sheaf of bristling mandibles lacquered in the same voidlike material. Scale: roughly as long as a human torso (3–4 ft. from fangs to rear), legs splay to nearly 8 ft. across when fully extended.
