Vestige-Prelate
Imperial Inquisitor
A Vestige-Prelate moves with the cold certainty of state power: every step measured, every stare a verdict. Clad in dark, lacquered cuirass and a mask of filigreed brass, the prelate is equal parts investigator and executioner — they drag the accused into austere rooms lit by smoking braziers and extract the truth as if it were an obligation owed to the Emperor. Their presence stills a crowd, and when one is unmasked the air seems to sharpen; rumors say a single branded word from a prelate can ruin a life and unmake a rebellion.

Multiattack. The Vestige-Prelate makes two attacks: one with its Rapier and one with its Bolt Pistol.
Rapier. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (1d8+5) piercing damage.
Bolt Pistol. Ranged Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, range 30/120 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6+4) piercing damage.
Interrogator's Brand (Recharge 5-6). The prelate produces a brass sigil and flings it toward one creature within 10 feet. The sigil erupts in a flash of cold light. The target must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or take 22 (5d8) psychic damage and be branded for 1 minute. A branded creature is frightened while in the prelate's line of sight and marked by the prelate: the prelate knows the direction to the target and automatically succeeds on Insight checks to discern the target's truthfulness. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the frightened condition on a success. If the saving throw is successful, the target takes half damage and is not branded.
Vestige-Prelates serve as the Emperor Somador's field inquisitors, a cadre formed from convicted archivists, battlefield adjudicators, and zealous clerks who swore fealty in exchange for posthumous redemption. They answer directly to Grand Inquisitor Veyruun at the Hall of Summation. Where magistrates debate law, prelates enforce decree: rooting out seditious faiths, breaching secret cults, and carrying imperial warrants into the hinterlands. They haunt border provinces and capital alleys alike. The scholars of the Kestrel Archive call them 'judge-echoes' — relentless, persistent, and difficult to unseat. Legends tell of a Vestige-Prelate named Jorrin Vale who dismantled an entire spy-cell with a single night of interrogations; the cell's survivors swear the prelate never raised their voice once. Factions like the Freebinders and the Nightwardens both tell darker tales — of bodies found with brass sigils burned into their palms and of children who speak to empty walls as if answering questions only a prelate can ask.
A Vestige-Prelate stands human-sized but unnervingly composed. Their mask is a narrow oval of hammered brass, inlaid with minute sigils and a single vertical slit for sight; when lowered the brass lips are fixed in an expressionless grimace. Over a high-collared gambeson they wear segmented cuirass plates, darkened and polished to a dull sheen, with a square breastplate stamped with the imperial cipher. Black leather straps hold a bandolier of vials, chalks, and a compact bolt-weapon. Their gauntleted hands are surprisingly slender, fingertips stained with ink and acid, each finger bearing a small ring etched with a different legal rubric. Cloak and tabard are sober, trimmed with thin lines of brass. Scars and faded certificate-seals sewn into the lining hint at a past of public adjudication and ritual penance.
