Vorik's Vowkeeper
Fanatic Shieldbearer
Clad in dented plate and bearing the battered banner of a long-dead regiment, a Vowkeeper moves with single-minded devotion: it never abandons the man or woman it swore to protect. It plants itself between its charge and danger, chanting short, iron prayers that make steel ring and wounds knit. To see one in combat is to see a living bulwark — unyielding, patient, and terrifyingly willing to trade its life so its general may live.

Multiattack. The Vowkeeper makes two attacks with its Mace.
Mace. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d6+5) bludgeoning damage.
Shield Bash. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d4+5) bludgeoning damage and the target must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
Spellcasting. The Vowkeeper is a 10th-level spellcaster. Its spellcasting ability is Wisdom (spell save DC 14, +6 to hit with spell attacks). The Vowkeeper has the following cleric spells prepared: Cantrips (at will): light, guidance, thaumaturgy 1st level (4 slots): bless, cure wounds, shield of faith 2nd level (3 slots): lesser restoration, spiritual weapon 3rd level (3 slots): beacon of hope, revivify 4th level (2 slots): death ward
Oathward Interpose. When a creature the Vowkeeper can see within 5 feet is hit by an attack, the Vowkeeper can use its reaction to swap places with that creature and become the target of the attack instead. If the attack hits the Vowkeeper, it gains resistance to the damage of that attack. Once the Vowkeeper uses this reaction, it can't use it again until it finishes a short or long rest.
Lay Hands (Healing Reaction). When an ally within 5 feet drops to 0 hit points, the Vowkeeper can use its reaction to expend a spell slot to restore 1d8+Wisdom modifier hit points per level of the spell slot spent (minimum 2 HP). It can use this reaction once per short rest.
Vowkeepers lair within marching camps, buried mausoleums of fallen commanders, or the ruined command towers of sieged fortresses. They eat little, subsisting on ritual rations and the comfort of repeated prayer, and are often worshipped or feared by surviving soldiers. The Order of the Oaten Beacon once tried to recruit Vowkeepers, but most refuse orders that conflict with their original oath; an oathbroken Vowkeeper—one whose charge has been slain and replaced for selfish reasons—becomes a wandering avenger that hunts oathbreakers and opportunists alike.
A Vowkeeper is a broad-shouldered human (or similar) in scuffed half-plate emblazoned with a single faded sigil. Their helm is crested with a small, fraying pennon that matches a larger banner they sometimes carry. The left forearm bears a permanent dark burn in the shape of a clasped hand — the mark of the Rite of Ever-Oath. Their eyes are dull but unwavering, with the faintly sickly glow of a recent healing prayer. Flesh near old wounds shows thin, pale seams where prayers knit tissue; small prayer beads are strung along their cuirass and shield rim. Overall scale: roughly human-sized, often depicted standing slightly forward of a crouched or injured officer to emphasize protective posture.
