Vesrath the Embered
Draconic Pyrecultist
Vesrath the Embered is a zealot braided with draconic fury: he moves with a serpentine grace and exhales heat that smells of charred bone. His rituals weave living flame with cold necrosis, leaving victims burned and their life force hollowed. In combat he alternates brutal bladework with devastating spells, and when pressed he summons a gout of dragonfire that singes armor and soul alike. A leader among pyre-worshipping cults, Vesrath is memorable because he treats flame as liturgy and death as scripture—those who survive his rites never forget the taste of ash.

Multiattack. Vesrath makes two melee attacks: one Dragonbrand and one Dreadclaw. He can replace one attack with a cast of Draconic Scorch (ranged spell attack) or Necrotic Bloom (spell save).
Dragonbrand. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8+5) slashing damage plus 7 (2d6) fire damage.
Dreadclaw. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (1d10+6) slashing damage and the target must succeed on a DC 16 Constitution saving throw or gain one level of exhaustion as necrotic soot creeps into their lungs.
Draconic Scorch. Ranged Spell Attack: +8 to hit, range 120 ft., one target. Hit: 22 (5d8) fire damage. Vesrath can choose to split the attack into two rays (each at -2 to hit) dividing the dice between them.
Necrotic Bloom. The target must make a DC 16 Constitution saving throw, taking 27 (6d8) necrotic damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. Creatures reduced to 0 HP by this effect are sheathed in cold black ash and are treated as dead for 1 minute (revivable only by a successful DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or by greater restoration).
Dragonbreath (Recharge 5-6). Vesrath exhales a cone of conflagrant necroflame in a 30-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw, taking 45 (10d8) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one. Creatures that fail the save also take 22 (5d8) necrotic damage at the start of their next turn as the ash saps life.
Spellcasting. Vesrath is a 12th-level spellcaster. His spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 16, +8 to hit with spell attacks). He has the following spells prepared: Cantrips (at will): produce flame, chill touch, mage hand. 1st level (4 slots): burning hands, shield. 2nd level (3 slots): scorching ray, mirror image. 3rd level (3 slots): fireball, vampiric touch. 4th level (3 slots): blight, fire shield. 5th level (2 slots): flame strike, negative energy flood.
Emberturn. When a creature misses Vesrath with a melee attack, Vesrath can cause a flicker of necroflame to lash the attacker. The attacker takes 7 (2d6) fire damage.
Vesrath was once a scholar of chromatic drakes who became obsessed with the junction of flame and death after deciphering a fragment of a ruined draconic liturgy called the Cinder Psalter. He founded the Embered Collegium, a secretive cabal based beneath the ruined monastery of Khor-Vess, where initiates learn to temper necromancy with draconic vigor. The Collegium is small but fanatical; caravans and small towns along trade routes have been raided by cultist cells seeking 'purer embers'—sacrificial catalysts for Vesrath's rites. Scholars disagree whether Vesrath gained his draconic edge through a pact with a dead wyrm caught between planes or by drinking an ichor brewed from dragonheart ash. The antiquarian Halim of Greymoor chronicled a close encounter with Vesrath's acolytes in the candlelit tunnels under Khor-Vess; Halim survived, and his treatise, The Embered Tongue, is the only known secular account of the Cinder Psalter. The Church of the White Lantern calls Vesrath a heresiarch and often leads expeditions to root out Collegium strongholds, though those expeditions rarely return intact.
Vesrath is a lean human male, taller than average (about 6'2") with an elongated neck and a pallid, almost ash-tinted complexion. Tattooed draconic runes spiral from his chest up over his jawline like blackened veins; when he channels magic those runes glow orange or sickly purple. He wears a patchwork cuirass—scale-shaped metal plates sewn over heavy cloth—etched with sigils of both flame and skull. His left arm bears a gauntlet of hammered bronze with a dragon's maw motif; his right hand is stained dark, as if perpetually scorched. His eyes are rimmed in soot with slitted pupils when he is aglow. For an artist: focus on a human figure with serpentine posture, layered scale-like armor panels, inked ritual sigils on exposed skin, and an aura of faint smoke. Include a short dragon-shaped bronze brazier affixed to his belt that emits curling wisps. Scale: pose him standing in a narrow stone alcove, human height against a doorway about 7 ft. high, soot-blackened walls scored with ceremonial burn marks.
