Urthok Bindbreaker

Shackled Colossus

A ruinous giant of pale, ashen skin and haunted, toothless maws, Urthok drags broken iron fetters that rattle like dry bones. It moves with the ponderous certainty of someone who has known chains for centuries; when it lifts a hand, the air seems to chill and the very sight of the rusted manacles provokes a cold dread. Urthok is not merely strong — it is a living weight of sorrow and appetite, stalking ruined halls and cliffside graves where it strips flesh and iron from the world.

Actions

Multiattack. The creature makes two Slam attacks.

Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (2d10+5) bludgeoning damage.

Rending Chain (Recharge 5-6). Urthok lashes out with a length of rusted chain in a 15-foot line. Each creature in that line must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or take 16 (3d8+3) necrotic damage and be pulled 10 feet toward Urthok and restrained by spectral links until the end of its next turn. A creature that succeeds on the save takes half damage and is not pulled or restrained.

Feeding Grasp. If Urthok hits a restrained creature with a slam, it can make the target grappled (escape DC 16). While grappled in this way, the target takes 7 (2d6) necrotic damage at the start of Urthok's turns as the shackles leech warmth.

Lore

Urthok Bindbreaker is a rare, cursed giant said to be the product of a brutal bargain between a clan of mountain giants and an unseen hunger from beneath the stone. Legends tell that giants who bound their prisoners in iron to sate some ancient ritual found their captors transformed: enormous bodies fused to shackles, minds dulled, and a fanged craving for carrion and the warmth of living muscle. Over generations the Bindbreakers drifted from clan to clan, their chains snapping and reknitting with an unnatural patience. Urthok in particular has become entwined with human memory. The Order of Iron Vigil — a small sect of relic-hunters and chain-priests — keeps a ledger of Bindbreaker sightings. Scholar Meris Heldon once mapped Urthok’s wanderings to the Karthun Barrows, where old battlefields splintered with grave mounds and overturned war wagons. The Order believes these colossi are both curse and guardian: they patrol places where iron and oath meet death, scavenging metal and blood, and in doing so they sever the last ties of those they consume. Few groups bother to hunt one; more often, they are bait for darker things that follow the chains.

Appearance

Urthok stands over 14 feet tall, a hulking silhouette of muscle draped in pallid, stretched skin scored by old lash marks and etching of burn scars. Thick cables of sinew cord its neck and forearms; its hands end in blunt, blackened nails rather than claws. Its face is heavy-browed with a collapsed nose and a maw rimmed with jagged, broken teeth; drooling ichor crusts the lower jaw. Rusted manacles and broken shackles are embedded halfway into its wrists and ankles — large iron links dangle and claw the ground as it moves. Where the metal enters flesh, the skin puckers with dark, necrotic ridges and faint runic scars that glow with a sickly dullness when it feeds. Rags and fragments of former armor hang from its waist and shoulders, swathed in old blood and dried mud. Scales of old battlefield grime and oxidized iron cling to its skin like barnacles. An artist should emphasize heavy cross-hatching on the folds of its skin, sharp contoured lines for the embedded iron, and the deep shadow between its brows; show a human warrior at its foot for scale and a toppled gravestone or broken siege ladder to hint at environment.
