Tallyxus

Infernal Auditor

Tallyxus is a small, officious imp who treats sin like bookkeeping: every lie, theft, and broken promise is an entry to be balanced. It arrives at inns and shrines with a battered ledger chained to its wrist, quill-tail dripping black ink, and an expression of petty righteousness. Where it goes, petty social catastrophes follow — lovers’ quarrels magnify, bargains unravel — as Tallyxus diligently converts chaos into columns and signatures for some infernal ledger that never forgives.

Actions

Multiattack. The creature makes two Claw attacks.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d4+2) slashing damage.

Mark for Audit (Recharge 5-6). Tallyxus brandishes its inky quill at one creature it can see within 30 feet. The target must succeed on a DC 12 Wisdom saving throw or be marked until the end of Tallyxus's next turn. A marked creature has disadvantage on Charisma checks and Tallyxus and its allies have advantage on Insight checks against the marked creature. A creature may repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success.

Lore

Tallyxus are lesser functionaries of infernal bureaucracy: contract-keepers assigned to audit the moral ledgers of mortals. They are said to be spawned in the margins of bargains made with devils and incubated in the ash of failed atonements. Rather than raw destruction, a Tallyxus pursues a subtler mischief: it tallies debts of sin, marks names with small, precise cruelty, and sends its reports through sigils to greater fiends who prize clean accounts. Scholars of demonology debate whether Tallyxus are individuals or animated grimoires given sly life. The archivists of the Hallowbound Registry once captured a specimen and recorded its habits: it prefers taverns, courthouse backrooms, and the anterooms of confessionals where human promises and excuses change hands. The order known as the Ledgerbound—and the disgraced magistrate Orren Halvik—claim Tallyxus have been observed cooperating with covetous clerks in the city of Mirewell, where a petty audit once toppled a minor lord. Those who oppose infernal contracts fear a Tallyxus most for the social rot it spreads rather than raw menace.

Appearance

Tallyxus stands roughly knee-high to an adult human (about 2½–3 feet tall). Its skin is the dull parchment color of old paper, mottled with ink blots and fine script-like scars. A narrow, angular face sits beneath a pair of coin-bright eyes; its mouth is thin and often pursed with grim concentration. Its ears taper to a point like folded paper, and a long tail ends in a quill nib that leaks ink when the creature is agitated. Its hands are slender, with ink-stained fingertip pads perfect for pressing seals; a small iron cuff and chain bind a battered leather ledger to its left wrist. The ledger's pages are layered with tiny tally marks, receipts, and infernal seals. Clothes, when worn, are a haphazard suit of patched waistcoat and soot-dark breeches, always neat despite the stains.
