Palimire
Mold That Remembers
Palimire is a creeping, semi-intelligent mold that assimilates the shapes and simple functions of whatever it devours. In a dim corridor it might impersonate a smashed helmet, a coiled rope or the ruined arm of a statue; in a pantry it becomes a loaf-shaped lump that exudes stinking spores. When it attacks, the Palimire unfurls tendrils and lapping pseudopods that mimic teeth, hooks or blunt clubs it has absorbed. The thing is uncanny because it looks like what it ate — and sometimes it remembers how that thing was used.

Multiattack. The Palimire makes two Tendril attacks.
Tendril. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d8+1) bludgeoning damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or have part of the target's outer clothing or a small piece of nonmagical gear (no larger than 1 cubic foot) fused to their skin by mycelial threads. While fused in this way the item is useless and the target has disadvantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks. The target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, freeing the item on a success. A creature that takes 5 slashing or fire damage to the fused item immediately frees it.
Consume Remnant (Recharge 5-6). The Palimire takes 1 minute to engulf and digest a single unattended organic object or small humanoid-sized corpse. If the object is consumed, the Palimire gains a minor mimetic growth that grants it advantage on one type of check or attack tied to that object's original use (DM's choice) until it consumes a different object.
Palimire are blamed for ruined provisions in coastal towns and for the slow disappearance of relics in abandoned temples. They are born from damp rot given an odd, compounding memory: a scrap of woven cloth squelches into fungus that remembers being fabric, a shard of bone becomes hardened mycelium that mimics a rib. Local harvesters sometimes call them "remembering mold" because a Palimire will often take on the most distinctive piece of its meal as a long, persistent growth. Scholars disagree about their origin. Archivist Brenne of Chalkshore argues they are a byproduct of contaminated archive bindings — glue and mold fused under the damp stacks of coastal libraries. The Sootbind, a guild of subterranean graverobbers, claim Palimire arise where organic waste sits for years near old altars. Palimire lair in cellars, caverns, and drowned shrines; they spread slowly over weeks, rarely moving until hungry. They consume organic matter and mundane objects, then employ the stolen form to ambush prey or to block passages. Hunters who study them warn: destroy the mold itself rather than try to pry the stolen shape loose, or the Palimire will simply re-form into something worse.
A Palimire appears as an irregular lump of pale, mottled mycelium and mucoid tissue, roughly the size of a large dog when unshaped. Its surface is a patchwork of textures: velvety spores, rubbery folds, stringy filaments, and occasionally the clear imprint of stitched fabric or bone. When it is imitating something it grows crystalline ridges and pseudo-edges that echo the original object's silhouette — a jagged helm rim, a curved handle, the suggestion of fingers. Tendrils extrude as thin, translucent tubes tipped with darker, sticky pads that glisten with sap and spores. The overall color ranges from damp gray-green to the pale ochre of old bread. Scale: when flattened into an object it can convincingly fit within a typical doorway or sit on a human-sized table; when active it can stretch tendrils 6–10 feet long.
