Lardmantle
Culinary Ooze
A glistening puddle of rancid grease and congealed fat, the Lardmantle oozes beneath kitchen tables and across scullery tiles. It moves like a stain with intent, swallowing dropped scraps and clinging to boots with a vile, sucking smear. What makes it memorable at the table is how it turns a mundane trip in a castle kitchen into a comic nightmare: knives slide from hands, torches gutter in its wake, and a coated adventurer finds themselves impotent against a creature that dissolves traction and dignity in equal measure.

Multiattack. The Lardmantle makes two Slime Lash attacks.
Slime Lash. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d8+3) bludgeoning damage. If the target is wearing nonmagical boots or otherwise reliant on traction, it must succeed on a DC 11 Dexterity saving throw or be knocked prone as the Lardmantle smears greasy film over its feet.
Greasy Trail. The Lardmantle leaves a slick patch of grease in a 5-foot square that it occupies or moves through. For 1 minute the square is difficult terrain. A creature that enters the slick or ends its turn there must succeed on a DC 11 Dexterity saving throw or fall prone. The Lardmantle can maintain up to two slick squares at a time; moving more than 10 feet ends the oldest slick.
Adherent Reflex. When a Medium or smaller creature that is grappled by the Lardmantle attempts to move more than 5 feet while still in contact with the ooze, that creature has disadvantage on the check to move and on any Strength (Athletics) checks made to escape until it spends an action to scrape the grease off or succeeds on a DC 11 Strength check.
Lardmantles are born where years of spilled fats, bone grease, and failed lardings have pooled in cold corners — in old keep kitchens, abandoned manor pantries, and the unseen drains beneath tavern hearths. Folklore says they are the grudging spirits of kitchens denied a proper burn, formed when a chef's curse or a botched ward lets rancid grease collect sentience. They do not hunger for flesh so much as for the flavors and heat of cooking; a single Lardmantle can ruin a week's worth of provisions and short out a coal-driven oven. Household records from the city of Grinros mention a pestering Lardmantle that haunted the kitchens of the House of Mange for three seasons; servants dubbed it "the scullery's conscience" and finally paid a visiting hedge-cook named Sernk to boil the greasy accumulations and consecrate the drain. Scholars of the Occult Gastronomy Guild debate whether Lardmantles are purely elemental oozes or bound spirits; both factions agree such creatures fear concentrated cold (freezing ruins their flow) and are driven off by steaming scalding water. Guildwrights and keep stewards sometimes mark storerooms with the sigil of the Hearthwrights to keep grease spirits from forming.
A Lardmantle looks like an irregular, shallow pool of glossy, yellow-brown fat thickened with streaks of blackened caramel and old spice flecks. Its edge ripples with thin filaments of congealed grease that stretch and snap like sticky taffy; when it moves it parts and reforms, leaving finger-thin tendrils that smear across the floor. Embedded between the layers are bits of charred bread, a broken bone, a silver fork warped into its surface, and a faint, oily sheen that reflects torchlight in nauseating highlights. Its texture is semi-solid: glossy and slightly translucent at the center, matt and grainy where old crumbs have crusted. Scale: typically the size of a large rug (6–8 feet across) when spread flat, but it can contract to a heel-sized puddle to pass under closed doors.
