Gelfract
Pantry Ooze
A Gelfract is a quivering blob of sugared gelatin that lives inside a glass jar, its glossy surface catching candlelight like a trapped moon. When a jar is cracked open the Gelfract oozes out in sticky flickers, leaving behind trails of syrup that gum locks and hinges and cling to anything it brushes. It is unnerving because it behaves like a nervous animal — curious, clingy, and capable of muffling a limb in minutes as it slowly congeals into a sweet, immobilizing seal.

Multiattack. The Gelfract makes two Tendril attacks.
Tendril. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6+2) bludgeoning damage, and the target is coated in sticky syrup. A coated creature's movement speed is reduced by 10 feet until it uses an action to scrape the syrup off (DC 10 Strength check using a simple tool such as a knife or stone), or until a creature uses an action to scrape it off for them. If the target is grappled by the Gelfract, it is restrained instead while coated.
Jar Slip (Recharge 5-6). The Gelfract can suddenly collapse into a slick sheet and slip into any glass, clay, or ceramic container within 5 feet that has an opening at least 3 inches across. If it enters a sealed container, that container's lid seals as if stuck with hardened syrup (DC 12 Strength to open). The Gelfract emerges from such a container automatically at the end of its next turn or when the container is opened.
Gelfracts are a peculiar domestic ooze that thrive in warm, sugar-rich environments: witches' pantries, bakeries kept by reclusive alchemists, and the sealed larders of old manor houses. They are born when a stray bit of fae essence or rune-sprinkle falls into a pot of jam during stirring; some say the first Gelfract was the result of a jealous kitchen sprite left to stew in preserves overnight. Once formed, a Gelfract secretes enzymes that ferment and thicken syrups, converting ordinary preserves into living vessels it uses as shelters. Households with Gelfract infestations tell similar stories: spoons vanish into jars, cupboards are sealed with gummy curtains, and helpful little tendrils rearrange spices at night. The antiquarian society known as the Glasswort Registry keeps the only formal records of them; an eccentric member, scholar Merik Hobb, once cataloged twelve distinct jar-preferences and noted that particular botanists' conserves will alter a Gelfract's color and temperament. Local witches sometimes breed them as improvised alarms or to preserve rare fruit—though the price is a pantry that won't open without a fight.
Imagine a jam jar with a viscous, glistening mass inside that constantly shifts: the Gelfract's body is semi-translucent, like thickened pectin, ranging in hue from clotted raspberry red to pearly lemon. It forms short, blunt tendrils that end in flattened pads used for suction; these pads are cross-scored with tiny ridges of crystallized sugar. When extended, the tendrils look like blobs of wobbly glass thread. Its surface collects crumbs, seeds, and jar sediment which adhere like barnacles; where it contacts a surface a dark, sticky smear remains. Scale: the Gelfract usually fills a standard jam jar (about the size of a human hand to fist), but when freed can spread across a tabletop to the length of a child's arm. Texture references: glossy gel, small sugar crystal flecks, thin syrup drips clinging to the jar lip.
