Atramentide
Sentient Scriptorium Ooze
Atramentides appear as living tides of oil-dark ink that crawl across tabletops and soak parchment like a living stain. They whisper in sibilant, half-formed letters as they move, smother quills mid-stroke, and slide into margins to read and consume written words. What makes them terrifying is not raw force but their obsession: they hunt manuscripts, spell scrolls, and the secrets written in blood or iron-gall ink, dissolving lore and turning careful scholarship into blank, dripping ruin.

Multiattack. The Atramentide makes two Tendril attacks.
Tendril. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (2d6+2) bludgeoning damage, and the target is splattered with acidic ink. The target must succeed on a DC 12 Dexterity saving throw or be Coated in Ink (see Coated in Ink below).
Absorb Script (Recharge 5-6). The Atramentide targets a nonmagical written document or an unattended inked surface within 10 ft. It engulfs or touches the writing; the ink dissolves and the Atramentide regains 2d8 hit points. If the target is a spell scroll of 1st or 2nd level, the Atramentide instead destroys the scroll and regains 4d8 hit points.
Atramentides are thought to be born when powerful intent, grief, or a failed binding meets a scriptorium's waste ink and iron salts. A single enraged word—erased, cursed, or improperly sealed—can seed a small ink-spill with sentience; given nights of moonlight and a stack of unattended folios, that seed grows into a cunning, hungry intelligence. Monasteries that lost entire libraries to Atramentides speak of pages that wept black tears and marginalia that crawled like ants away into darkness. Scribes of the Ember Quorum keep a ritualized 'inking out' to prevent births of Atramentides, and the scholar Vennor Kest compiled the Kest Ledger, an illustrated taxonomy of their behaviors and favoured inks. The Atramentide that haunted the Hall of Grathen devoured five chronicled histories before a party of archivists lured it into a mercury-lined cistern, where it stalled for a decade before dissolving. Atramentides are ambush predators in workshops and ruins—eating knowledge restores them, and they will often retreat to damp, ink-stained niches to brood over partially-digested sentences.
Imagine a puddle of wet, obsidian ink that has learned to lurch. Its mass is roughly the size of a small table when coalesced—an amorphous oval of glossy black, threaded with silvered iron flecks and tiny, pale bubbles that look like pinprick eyes. Thin tendrils extend from its edges like calligraphic strokes, each one ending in a ragged fringe that resembles frayed quill fibers. Where it touches parchment the ink seems to bloom, letters unraveling into oily filaments that sink back into the body. On a tabletop it can thin into a sheen that slips under a closed book; on the floor it puddles into a shallow, reflective pool. Scale reference: when fully spread it can block a standard wooden door's lower half; next to a kneeling human scribe it reaches up to mid-thigh in height as a lurching mass.
