Nyrren Warden
Woodland Steward
The Nyrren Warden is a dryad unlike the playful sprites of nursery songs: it is the forest's appointed steward, austere and deliberate. Where it moves, young shoots lean toward its footsteps, thorn and vine rearranging as if in salute; where it lingers, paths close and predators find themselves unnerved. It serves a genderless, nameless woodland deity and enforces that deity's balance — by gentle guidance when possible, by strangling thorns when necessary. Adventurers who anger a Nyrren rarely face a mindless huntress; they face a patient intelligence that knows every root, hollow, and secret trail within its grove.

Multiattack. The Nyrren Warden makes two Thorned Branch attacks.
Thorned Branch. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (2d6+2) slashing damage plus 3 (1d6) piercing damage as small thorns rake the target.
Forest's Grasp (Recharge 5-6). The Nyrren Warden calls roots and vines up in a 30-foot cone. Each creature in that area must succeed on a DC 12 Strength saving throw or be restrained by grasping vegetation. A restrained creature can use its action to make a Strength check against the same DC, ending the effect on itself on a success. Nonmagical flames within the area are doused. The vegetation withers after 1 minute unless the Warden sustains it.
Charm of the Grove. The Nyrren can target one humanoid it can see within 30 feet. If the target fails a DC 12 Wisdom saving throw, it is charmed by the Nyrren for 1 hour or until the Nyrren or its allies attack it. A creature charmed in this way regards the Nyrren as a trusted friend and will not willingly harm it unless commanded by a stronger loyalty. A successful Wisdom save makes the target immune to this Nyrren's Charm of the Grove for 24 hours.
Leafstep. When a creature the Nyrren can see ends its turn within 5 feet of the Warden and hits it with a melee attack, the Nyrren can force that creature to make a DC 12 Dexterity saving throw or have its movement speed halved until the end of its next turn as thorned leaves tangle its feet.
Nyrren Wardens are born when a dryad's bond to a particular grove is consecrated by the rites of the Nameless Green, a genderless deity worshipped in whispered rites by scattered cults and hermits. Unlike ordinary dryads tied to single trees, a Nyrren's spirit is woven into the living lattice of an entire woodland: root, moss, and fungus all answer, in small ways, to its will. They act as mediators between beasts, trees, and nearby settlements, settling disputes with an uncanny mixture of diplomacy and natural coercion. Scholars of the Verdant Conclave record that Nyrren Wardens are rare; when one appears, it is said the grove is in a period of change — recovering from blight, repelling an unnatural incursion, or preparing the forest for a new season of predators and prey. Famous encounters include the folktales of Thistlebarrow Hollow, where a Nyrren brokered a fragile peace between an encroaching logging band and the deer herds of the lowland. The Conclave's archivist, Brenn of Korvel, keeps a thorn-marked ledger of those who have angered a Nyrren and lived to tell the tale — a short list, each entry marked with a note on humility.
A Nyrren Warden looks like a tall, willowy humanoid formed from living wood and green growth rather than flesh. Its skin is a variegated bark: smooth pale elm along the face and neck, knotted oak across shoulders and calves. Long, jointed limbs end in fingers tipped with dark calluses that look like hardened sap. Along its spine and shoulders sprout seasonal foliage—delicate fern fronds in spring, glossy laurel leaves in summer, small crimson berries in autumn. Vines coil subtly around its arms and torso like decorative tattoos; tiny mushrooms cluster where its joints creak. Its eyes are blind-amber, with ringed pupils like tree rings. Scale reference: stands roughly 5'8" to 6' tall, often pictured beside a human ranger for scale, half-submerged roots curling at its feet; it favors shaded glades, ancient stumps, and doorways carved into living trees.
