Morguist
Arbiter of Even Bargains
A Morguist is a silk-suited fey broker who treats every exchange as a binding ritual. It bargains with the certainty of a judge and the smile of a gambler — if you take advantage of it, the contract will be enforced with teeth and thorn. Adventurers remember a Morguist not for a single terrible attack but for the slow, cold economy of its magic: debts paid in pain, favors tallied in blood, and promises carved into a rival’s memory.

Multiattack. The Morguist makes two Rapier attacks and may use Bargain Strike once if it hits with at least one attack.
Rapier. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (1d8+5) piercing damage.
Bargain Strike. When the Morguist hits a creature with a Rapier attack, it can invoke Bargain Strike to force the target to make a DC 18 Charisma saving throw (DC = 8 + proficiency bonus + CHA modifier). On a failed save, the target takes an additional 14 (4d6) psychic damage and is bound by a compulsive bargain for 1 minute: while bound the creature cannot willingly take an action to directly harm the Morguist (attacking, casting a harmful spell); it must treat the Morguist’s offers as fair and will not willingly break a one-sentence promise made to the Morguist even if inconvenient. A creature can repeat the save at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success. On a success, the target takes half the psychic damage and is not bound.
Contractual Ledger (Recharge 5–6). The Morguist unfurls a strip of enchanted paper and inscribes a name in impossible ink. Each creature of the Morguist’s choice within 60 feet that can see the ledger must succeed on a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or have a debt mark attached: while marked, when the creature deals damage it takes psychic feedback equal to half the damage dealt (minimum 1) and the Morguist gains temporary hit points equal to that feedback. The mark lasts 1 minute or until the Morguist drops to 0 hit points. A marked creature can make another Wisdom save at the end of each of its turns, ending the mark on a success.
Counteroffer. When a creature within 30 feet makes an attack roll against the Morguist, the Morguist can use its reaction to force the attacker to reroll the attack and use the new result (Morguist knows the new roll). The attacker must succeed on a DC 18 Charisma saving throw or the reroll is done with disadvantage.
Morguists claim descent from an ancient court of coinkeeping fey said to have overseen the first markets of the Feywild, where bargains weighed more than crowns. Their origin stories vary — some say they were born from the ledger leaves of the Autumn Court, others insist they sprang from a broken oath between a satyr and a treant. Whatever their true birth, all Morguists bear the same axiom: every advantage must balance with a price. Morguists frequent border markets and crossroads where bargains are forged: the Ever-Counting Bazaar beneath the moonflower boughs, the Tolling Gate between mortal roads and fey paths, and the ledger-laden halls of the House of Half-Measure. Scholars such as Archivist Belthin of Wyrfen Keep record that Morguists habitually collect written promises and keep a ledger of grudges; townsfolk whisper of lost caravans that vanished after a mispriced trade. Merchant guilds treat the name with a wary respect — the Silver Chain hires Morguists as impartial arbiters, while outlaw traders curse them for strict enforcement.
A Morguist appears as a tall, angular humanoid with the pale, waxen skin of one who spends more time under lamplight than sunlight. Its face is narrow, with a permanent mild smile and eyes like polished brass coins, rimmed with faint leaflike veins. It wears layered coats of glossy fabrics that shimmer with tiny patterns of cancelled receipts; cuffs and collars are embroidered in thin metallic thread that resembles tally marks. Instead of jewelry, it carries a long wallet of stitched leather and bone, from which protrudes a stack of thin, fluttering paper contracts. Its hands end in slender, unnaturally nimble fingers tipped with black, slightly hooked nails. Small, seasonal growths — a sprig of frost, an autumnal leaf, a single living blossom — cling to its shoulders and lapel, shifting with the Feywild’s weather. Scale: stands about 6 feet tall; its presence fills a merchant’s stall like a doorway framed in shadow.
