Morgrenn Rootbound
Cursed Graveward
A towering treant twisted by grave-soil and funeral rites, the Morgrenn Rootbound stands sentinel over a forgotten burial ground. Gravestones are laced into its bark like teeth; slow, deliberate movements scatter withered leaves that cling to the air like ash. It does not merely repel intruders — it drags them beneath the earth to join the chorus of the buried, its roots whispering names of the dead as it tightens its grip. Encountering a Morgrenn is to be judged by a patient, implacable force that treats living trespassers the way a graveyard treats weeds.

Multiattack. The Morgrenn Rootbound makes two Slam attacks.
Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (2d10+4) bludgeoning damage.
Entangling Roots (Recharge 5-6). The Morgrenn strikes the ground and lashes a 30-foot-radius area centered on itself with animated roots. Each creature in that area must succeed on a DC 16 Strength saving throw or be restrained as thick roots and sod rise and entangle them. A restrained creature can use its action to repeat the Strength save, ending the effect on itself on a success. While restrained by these roots, a creature takes 21 (6d6) bludgeoning damage at the start of each of its turns as earth grinds against flesh and armor.
Graveward Command. The Morgrenn calls upon the binding rites woven into its bark. Each ally plant creature within 60 feet that the Morgrenn can see regains 14 (4d6) hit points.
Barkward. When the Morgrenn is hit by a melee attack, it can harden its bark to reduce the damage by 14 (once per round).
The Morgrenn Rootbound are treants warped by centuries of concentrated grief and funerary magic. Centuries ago, a cult called the Veilwardens performed long rites in a moss-choked cemetery known as Hallowfen to anchor the spirits of a region’s dead. When the rites decayed and the cult vanished, a single sentinel tree, suffused with ritual iron and votive soil, awakened with an obsessive duty to guard those buried there. Over generations similar rootbound treants have formed where funerary rites and bitter losses converged, each binding itself to its cemetery with a compulsion stronger than hunger. Scholars such as Scribe Irel of the Mortuary Archive have cataloged accounts of the Morgrenn; Irel’s note warns that the treant’s wrath is not random — it enforces a strict code of sanctity. Grave-robbing, desecration, or prolonged mourning that invites hauntings draw its ire. Small factions, like the Gravewrights of Kest, try to parley with rootbounds to maintain peace, leaving offerings of salt and lantern-light. Legends tell of a secret phrase, coined by a long-dead ritualist named Varr Ruem, that will still the Morgrenn long enough for passage — but those who learn the phrase seldom reveal it, and none can be sure the treant has not already forgotten.
A hulking, humanoid tree standing roughly 16–18 feet tall, its trunk bowed into shoulders and a rough, gnarled face carved by centuries of wind and sorrow. Cracked, darkened bark is threaded with pale veins of funerary soil and bits of lichen that form ghostlike patterns. Sunken hollows hold tiny stone effigies and fragments of tombstone, set into cavities like teeth. Limbs end in knobby, root-like fingers tipped with shattered flint and root-sinew; when it moves, loose soil and brittle bones tumble from mossy crevices. Its lower trunk splits into a braided mass of roots that can surge into the earth; small lanterns and prayer-ribbons tangle among those roots, giving the treant a haunted, ceremonial silhouette.
