Grumbrel
Rabid Thornhound
A compact, hairless canid bristling with hardened keratin spines along its neck and shoulders, the Grumbrel moves with an erratic, snapping fury that makes it terrifying despite its small stature. It attacks with reckless abandon, biting and raking at anything that threatens its territory or its pack. Its high-pitched, rasping bark and sudden lunges put foes off balance; hunters learn quickly that a Grumbrel is less dangerous alone than in company, where its relentless aggression and pack tactics turn nuisance into menace.

Multiattack. The Grumbrel makes two attacks: one with its Bite and one with its Claw.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d8+1) piercing damage.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d6+1) slashing damage.
Ferocious Intercept. When an ally within 5 feet is hit by an attack, the Grumbrel can use its reaction to move up to its speed toward the attacker and make one Claw attack against that attacker; this attack does not provoke opportunity attacks.
Grumbrels are believed to have sprung from the margins of civilized lands where the soil is thin and thorns rule the scrub. Villagers tell that centuries of scraping hunger and bramble-scarred breeding produced a lean, spine-armored dog that favors thickets, ruins, and low chaparral. They nest in tangles of roots and thorn, dragging small prey into dense cover; their litters are reared communally and often raid farms in coordinated dawn strikes. Scholars of uncanny fauna note two strains: the common roadside Grumbrel and the rarer black-thorn variety tied to salt-marsh folklore. The naturalist Galen Hest chronicled Grumbrels in his field notes for the Harrow Kennel Conservancy, describing their surprising intelligence for ambushes and their tendency to adopt simple tools — bits of bone or metal — as trophies. Local legends say the Rookfen thieves once trained a pack to harry wagon routes; modern wardens advise never underestimating a Grumbrel's boldness around isolated travelers.
A small canid roughly the size of a large housecat to a small shepherd dog (about 2½–3 feet long including head, shoulder height ~14 inches). Its skin is puckered and callused, a dull leather tone streaked with salt-gray. Along the nape, shoulders, and down the forelegs sprout rows of short, needlelike keratin spines — not true fur but rigid plates that glint like dull bone. The muzzle is elongated, filled with crooked teeth; eyes are small, molten amber with a permanent wary glare. No tail — the spine and rump end blunt and calloused. Paws are broad, with thick pads and dark claws stained from burrowing; the ribs show beneath taut skin. Scars, old braid-like notches in the ears, and bits of woven string or bone amulets tied to the necks of dominant animals are common, hinting at both a harsh life and grudging connections to humanoid settlements.
