Kraghoth
Ferocious Forest Runner
A Kraghoth looks like a stocky black bear bent on violence, but it moves with the abrupt, leaping burst of a hunted predator. It explodes from cover in a blur of fur and claws, using reckless, bounding sprints to close with prey and land savage, repeated blows. Its habit of charging at full pace and striking mid-bound leaves little time for foes to react—what makes a Kraghoth terrifying at the table is not a single devastating blow but the impression that it will simply never stop trying to overpower whoever it chooses.

Multiattack. The Kraghoth makes two attacks: one with its Claw and one with its Bite.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d8+1) slashing damage.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 4 (1d6+1) piercing damage.
Bounding Charge (Recharge 5-6). If the Kraghoth moves at least 20 feet straight toward a creature and then hits it with its Claw attack on the same turn, the target takes an extra 4 (1d8) bludgeoning damage and must succeed on a DC 11 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone. (DC = 8 + proficiency bonus + STR mod; proficiency +2, STR mod +1.)
Kraghoth are a brutal, highly mobile subspecies of Ursid found in the shadowed, tangled woodlands of the Grensward and the peat forests of the Rulfen Mire. Hunters tell of packs that learn to ‘run the line’—racing through narrow corridors of brush to ambush travelers and livestock with dizzying speed. Kraghoth are not pack hunters in the way wolves are, but mothers and yearlings will cooperate and older individuals sometimes work together to surround stubborn prey. Scholar Aurem Vire of the Alderbranch Institute cataloged Kraghoth in the Century of Blighted Pines, noting their unusual burst-speed behavior and a tendency to raid traps and snares rather than fall for them. The timbermen's guild of Halfenway treats them as seasonal pests; ranger conclaves call them ‘running bears’ and advise caravans to avoid tight forest chokepoints. Legends among the woodfolk claim a Kraghoth who outran a falling glade and plundered the corpse of a treant—an unlikely story, but one that expresses how these beasts are remembered: relentless and unnervingly swift.
A Kraghoth is about the size of a common black bear but noticeably sleeker: shoulders are muscular and compact, hindquarters slightly longer to power sudden bursts. Fur is dense, matte black with faint brown highlights along the flanks; the coat lies flatter than in other bears, showing corded muscles beneath. The muzzle is shorter and the jaw broader, with yellowed, blunt teeth; small, forward-set eyes glint with fierce intensity. Forepaws are large with long, curved claws used for grasping and slashing; hind paws show thick pads and longer tendons for explosive springing. Scars and calluses often cross the forelimbs and chest from repeated tumbling through brambles. Size reference: the animal stands roughly chest-high to an average human and is easily as long as an adventurer lying prone, often photographed steaming breath in cold air with drool flecked at the corners of its mouth.
