Ghrasket Rootmorne
Wailing Woodfather
At first glance it is an ancient tree with knotted bark and sprawling limbs — until the bark peels back like a healed mouth and a face of warped wood howls. Ghrasket Rootmorne lurches with surprising speed, its bark‑fingers slamming and its hollow visage unleashing a rasping, mind‑numbing wail. It drags roots and soil after it, leaving tulip‑shaped pits where travellers once stood; those who meet its gaze feel memory‑cold and hunted, as if forests themselves have learned to hate them.

Multiattack. The Ghrasket makes two Branch Slam attacks.
Branch Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (2d8+2) bludgeoning damage.
Horrific Visage. The Ghrasket opens its bark‑maw and emits a wood‑cold wail. Creatures of the Ghrasket's choice within 30 feet that can see its face must succeed on a DC 12 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened for 1 minute. A frightened creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. While frightened by this ability, a creature takes 7 (2d6) psychic damage at the start of each of its turns as memories tax the mind.
Grasping Roots. When a creature the Ghrasket can see within 10 feet of it moves, the Ghrasket can attempt to trip it by rooting the ground. The target must succeed on a DC 12 Strength saving throw or have its speed reduced to 0 until the end of its next turn.
Ghrasket Rootmorne are solitary, territorial guardians born where temple groves die and rot is fed with grief. Folktales claim they erupt from trees felled by terrible bargains — burial sites of betrayed oaths or groves burned to break an old fae pact. The Order of the Hollow Bough has recorded three such creatures in the borderlands of Veskholm; all emerged within a season of a village burning a sacrificial copse to drive off a blight. Hunters and foresters avoid places called hush‑rings — circular clearings ringed with blackened roots and the stumps of saplings shaped like reaching hands. Scholars differ on whether Ghrasket are animated spirits wearing wood like armor or plants shaped by a corrosive will. The reclusive druid Merioth Kest recalls trading a single ripe apple to one Ghrasket to spare his child; more often, the creature eats roots, fungi, and carrion and defends its territory by drawing the living into the soil where it can leach away courage and memory.
Imagine a large, gaunt oak roughly twice the height of a human (about 12–15 feet tall) with limbs like elongated arms that bend at odd, jointed knots. Its trunk is flared at the base with exposed, wiry roots that curl into grasping talons. Where a face should be there is a vertical fissure in the bark: layered ridges of coarse, dried cambium form a nose and a gaping maw of split wood; dark, sap‑black hollows sit where eyes might be, rimmed with thin white lichen that looks like cataracts. The surface of its bark is furrowed and chewed as if by insect mandibles; strands of moss hang like shredded cloth. When it moves, the grain of the wood seems to shift as if breathing, leaving thin lines of pale resin. For scale, show a human ranger crouched at the trunk's knee height, fingers brushing a knotted root that could easily lift a man. Set the scene at the edge of a burned clearing: charred stumps and a single crooked shrine post provide context.
