Gavress
Marsh Forger
The Gavress is a squat, heavily muscled goose the size of a warhorse, moving with surprising speed across marsh and meadow. It uses enormous wings more like battering rams than for flight, charging, shoving, and trampling foes while its thick beak hacks and rips. Unlike the graceful geese told in children's tales, Gavress are blunt, territorial hulks: they establish stone-lined nesting mounds and will relentlessly pursue intruders across land, battering armor and scattering pack animals with terrifying, earth-shaking slams.

Multiattack. The Gavress makes two attacks: one Beak attack and one Wing Buffet.
Beak. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (2d6+3) piercing damage.
Wing Buffet. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d8+3) bludgeoning damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 13 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
Gavress are native to broad inland wetlands and floodplain commons where stubborn currents deposit clay and pebbles. They evolved from ordinary waterfowl into heavy-bodied grazers that rely on bulk and brute force rather than wings. Local farmers tell of flocks that once broke wooden carts and drove wolves from den sites; their nests are often ringed with small stones and bones collected by the birds for reasons scholars still debate. Most scholars link Gavress proliferation to the habits of the Marshwarden Circle, a communal group of herders and reed-binders who cultivate shallow pools and deliberately leave low embankments to encourage Gavress nesting. Chronicler Bryndan Iver recorded a raid on the village of Trevold where a single Gavress routed a dozen mounted militia by knocking horses prone and ripping barding. The birds respect nothing but territorial custom; even wolves and bears give way if a Gavress refuses to retreat.
A Gavress stands as tall as a horse's shoulder but is deeply compact: broad chest, short thick legs like a draft animal, and a rounded flank layered with dense waterproof feathers that bristle outward. Its neck is thick and corded, supporting a heavy, ridged beak stained dark at the tip from grit and crushed shell. Wing bones are short and muscular; the primary wing feathers are frayed and blunt from battering, edged with mud and fossilized grit. Legs end in broad, flattened webbed feet with blunt talons useful for digging. Scale reference: when standing beside a human, the Gavress's back rises to about a human's eye level; when lunging it covers several steps. Textures: matted, oily feathers over callused skin patches, stone-dusted beak, scabbed knuckles on joints, and tufts of reed fiber and small bones woven into nesting plumage.
