Urskel
Sleeper-Roused Cave Bear
A hulking mass of fur and muscle, the Urskel lumbers from cave mouths with the slow, terrifying certainty of winter given up too soon. Roused before its fat stores have recovered, it is more relentless and irritable than a normal bear: it charges with blind force, bites and slashes with reckless abandon, and will fight until it collapses from exhaustion. The air around its maw tastes of frost and old rot, and its breath fogs as it bellows — a living avalanche of claws and teeth that can smash through crude wooden doors and send packs scattering.

Urskel are an ecotype of Ursine that evolved in deep karst systems and high ravines where prolonged, deep hibernation is the rule. Unlike surface bears, Urskel depend on a single long winter to cycle fat and hormones; when storms or warming steal that season early, whole dens awaken starving and frantic. Hunters in the high ranges tell of entire litters roused and driven into nearby settlements, not out of cleverness but brute need. Scholars such as the naturalist Keldan Mire of the Rimward Conservatory have noted Urskel dens near the fractured cliffs of the Vermuch Cleft. The wardens of the Stoneward Keep keep careful logs: encounter reports often cite the "sleeper-roused" behavior—short bursts of unnatural aggression followed by long, stuporous sleep. Folktales speak of a cult, the Stone-Shelled Brotherhood, that leaves salted meat at certain cave mouths to placate the beasts during poor winters; whether superstition or careful observation, the practice reduces raids where the Brotherhood still holds sway.
Massive and low-slung, the Urskel stands about as tall at the shoulder as a human is at the head (roughly 5–6 feet at the shoulder), weighing as much as a laden pack mule. Its fur is coarse and matted, layered in ashy grays and peat-brown bands with streaks of dried blood and mud. The skull is broad with a heavy brow ridge and shortened snout, giving its face a blunt, brutal look; yellowed tusk-like canines protrude slightly from the upper jaw. Forelimbs are thick as tree trunks with long curved claws stained dark at the tips; the hindquarters are shorter, built for short explosive charges rather than long pursuit. Patches of dead skin and torn fur rim the flanks where cave rocks scraped during hibernation; breath emits as a faint steam when the beast is excited. Scars and healed ribs are common on older animals, and a den-grown Urskel often wears small cave detritus — bits of fern, powdered limestone — tangled into its mane.
