Floraswine

Blooming Forager

A squat boar whose bristly hide blooms with living flowers, the Floraswine moves like a spring riot given legs and a snout. Wherever it pads, petals unfurl and tiny buds push through the earth in its wake, turning trampled paths into colorful ribbons. It roots with uncanny purpose, unearthing buried trinkets and coin caches with equal excitement; despite its harmless looks the boar will charge fiercely to protect a fresh find, tusks flashing through a halo of blossoms.

Actions

Charge and Tusk. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6+2) piercing damage. If the Floraswine moved at least 10 feet straight toward the target immediately before the attack, the target takes an extra 3 (1d6) piercing damage.

Snout Root. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one object or small target. Hit: 4 (1d4+2) bludgeoning damage and the Floraswine can immediately attempt to dig at the ground in a space within 5 feet of it. It can unearth a buried nonmagical item of no more than 1 lb. in weight that was buried in that space within the last year (DM's discretion).

Lore

Folklore among rural traders speaks of Floraswine as gardeners of fate — creatures that dig where luck sleeps. Hunters and orchard-keepers in the low hedgeridges once considered the animals omens: one sighting meant newly uncovered wealth, three meant a household would see a new child or crop. The Rootwardens, a modest guild of foragers and hedge-keepers, keep careful notes of Floraswine trails, often following them to recover lost heirlooms or to replant vulnerable saplings where the boars have cleared the soil. Scholars have puzzled over the creature's origin. The naturalist Brel Tins documented a sudden spread of floral growth around an ancient standing stone in the northern fen and tied the first local Floraswine to that glyph-carved monolith, proposing a symbiosis with minor land-magic. Farmers in the hamlet of Neth Erran tell a different tale: they say the beasts were once ordinary boar, touched by a grieving hedge-witch who wove spring blooms into their fur to honor the dead. Whether spirit or soil, Floraswine often attract both pilgrims seeking luck and thieves hunting the treasures the animals unearth.

Appearance

A stout, compact boar about the size of a war horse's lower chest (roughly chest height to a human's waist). Its body is covered in coarse dark brown bristles, but between the bristles clusters of small flowering plants — tiny daisies, cradle-violets, and creeping bellflowers — erupt in living patches along its back, shoulders, and flanks. These blossoms vary in color and bloom stage, from tight buds to full open flowers, and a faint dusting of pollen coats the boar's snout. Its tusks are short and worn, flecked with soil; the hooves are broad for rooting. Petals and loose stems trail behind, sometimes carpeting a narrow path three to five feet wide and littering the boar's flank with soil and tiny clinging roots. The creature's face retains a boar's blunt intelligence: small dark eyes set beneath a fringe of floral growth, and nostrils permanently damp and stained with earth.
