Velvet Ledger House
the hotel at the edge of mapped civilization
Velvet Ledger House occupies a one-time trading post turned genteel hotel: polished plank floors, wool rugs stitched with far-traveller motifs, and lantern light that settles warm and even. The air smells of roasted root, pipe tobacco, and beeswax; a pianist (or a patient traveler with calloused fingers) tinkles a quiet tune beneath low conversation. The clientele are frontier merchants in well-oiled coats, an exiled minor nobility keeping an eye on every ledger, and the occasional itinerant scholar whose maps peek from an oilskin roll. Behind the long bar stands a ledger bound in cracked leather — accounts, favors, and reservations recorded with a careful, deliberate hand.
A carved oak tablet hung on iron rings: a quill and coin crossed over a stitched velvet square; the paint is glossy and well-kept, the brass ring polished to a soft glow.

Honest Wren
A merchant captain who uses the hotel's vault to hide a small chest she insists contains only trade manifests — but she looks cagey when the caravan rumour is mentioned.
1
A supply caravan bound for Gornwell vanished three nights ago; Honest Wren's manifest shows the caravan carried a crate labeled 'Library' that never reached the town.
2
A raiders' banner with a half-moon and ledger mark has been seen near the Fallen Tongue crossing; Marshal Joss Kerran believes their leader is an ex-mercenary named Berrik Slate.
3
Professor Halvon claims a ruined surveyor's marker at Old Quarry hides a map fragment pointing to a buried storeroom of frontier-era coin and a sealed letter addressed to Baroness Mire Dorrin.
