The Knotted Signet
the frontier hotel with a noble's manners
Polished plank floors lead from the rough road into a high-ceilinged common room that smells of lemon oil, roasted venison, and beeswax. Lanterns hang in glass globes that scatter gold across embroidered tapestries—motifs of heraldic vines and a single knot repeated—while a low string quartet plays near the hearth on evenings when travelers can still be heard. Guests arrive in dusted boots and reeking cloaks but are offered cloth wraps, steaming punch, and a towel before being asked where they slept last. Conversation here is measured; laughter arrives like a practiced aria. A carved stone bar anchors one wall, behind it neat shelves of jars, crystal decanters and labelled tinctures. Servitors in plain but well-cut livery move with discreet efficiency: trays slip through elbows without clatter, arguments are redirected with a raised hand and a glass, and the manager's portrait—an austere face with a crooked signet ring—watches from a small gallery above the stairs. Even at night, the hotel feels like a held breath waiting for something to happen.
An iron sign of a twisted signet ring, blackened at the edges but polished where hands have brushed it; no words, just the ring's emblem and a faint streak of old, dried crimson along one edge.

Sera Vossin
A well-dressed merchant who funds caravans and quietly probes for a lost ledger that could ruin a rival; she meets Morven in the gallery when the light is low.
Captain Jorun Tal
A veteran guide who claims to have run the governor's caravan once and is looking for men to investigate a string of missing wagons near Drybar Hollow.
1
The jeweled pin stolen from the governor's caravan is being traced; a courier named Marek was seen near Drybar Hollow with a ring-shaped seal matching the hotel's signet.
2
A watchtower east of the river called Blackreach has started sending up a single signal flare each night; Old Man Blen insists there's a map hidden in the tower's foundation stones.
3
Three supply wagons from Sera Vossin's caravans vanished without tracks; Captain Jorun Tal suspects a hidden ford and offers coin for a scouting party.
