The Winter Ledger

the trappers' rendezvous on auction week

The Winter Ledger smells of smoked meat, wet wool, and boot leather steeped in ale. Sconces gutter with tallow and a single iron chandelier swings gently over a floor strewn with straw, fur pelts, and upturned crates serving as tables; laughter and shouted bids roll through the room whenever the auctionmaster bangs his hammer. Trappers hunch along the bar, elbows blackened from mending snares, while a cluster near the hearth argues over takedown prices; wet dogs — some real, some prized pelts in transit — and a fiddler who never plays the same tune twice add to the chaos. A corner curtained with oilcloth hides the auction table, where numbers are chalked on bone chips and promising hauls change hands by the hour.

Over the door

A rough-hewn board painted with a ledger and a crossed trap; the paint is salt-faded and one corner is chewed, no words, only the pair of icons

The keeper

Merris Hobb

human

Manner

Merris runs the Ledger with a blunt laugh and a ledger chain at his belt; he tolerates insults as long as the ale keeps flowing and the auction keeps moving. He treats newcomers with a rapid-fire blend of suspicion and welcome — he'll gruffly offer a cot, then prod them about where they last set a snare.

Quirk

Counts the coins in his hand whenever someone mentions a fur type, muttering prices under his breath.

Stats

Use the Commoner stat block; carries a heavy cudgel behind the bar and has +3 to Int checks regarding pelt values and trade routes.
House special

Trader's Throat

4 cp

A burnt-grain shot mixed with spruce bitters and a pinch of salt; it clears the head, loosens tongues, and makes liars bolder for one conversation (advantage on Deception for one roll, then a -2 penalty to Charisma checks for the next hour).

Staff

Gwen Metts · cook

A one-eyed woman who turns salted haunch and root stew into something trappers call 'worth the trip'; she hums a mournful tune while cutting fat.

Rill · barmaid

Small, quick-footed, and foul-mouthed, Rill balances a tray of ale while writing down bids when the auction turns too hectic.

Brek Ironsole · bouncer

An ex-trapper as solid as packed snow who clears tables with a stare and keeps the more violent grievances out by the door.

Regulars

Hoss Grune

A grizzled otter-hunter who always has a tale about the 'one that got away' and is quietly trying to gather funds for a dangerous river run.

Sister Mave

A traveling herbalist who buys offcuts and inspects pelts for parasites while collecting specimens for a sealed grove — she warns that some trappers have angrier spirits in their snares.

Irik of the Dark Line

A soft-voiced fence who appears during auctions to bid high on certain pelts, and who is on Merris's private list of buyers.

Rumours
  1. 1

A hunter named Kaelbrun claims a white fox pelt with a missing ear is haunted; he says the spirit follows the buyer to their camp and scratches at window frames.

  2. 2

Irik of the Dark Line bought a crate of 'river cats' pelts and plans a midnight run to the river-fort to sell them to Captain Velm; someone saw men in cut leather with a wolf sigil load the crate.

  3. 3

Sister Mave whispers that the moss on the north ridge is regrowing lawless snares overnight — she wants brave folk to find the stone circle where the snares are rooted.

Look out for
Central auction curtained with oilcloth and a bone-chip ledger for bids — anyone can call an item and start bidding.A peltboard: a pegboard listing pelt prices; locals sometimes alter it at night to cheat buyers (GM can have checks to notice tampering).
