The Buckled Sled
the trappers' rendezvous on the thawing road
Steam from trade stoves and damp cloaks hangs in the low ceiling as men and women stamp snow from boots and swap measured lies over steaming stew. The common room smells of smoked meat, tallow, and cheap barley ale; the din is constant—laughter, the slap of coin on the bar, and the sharp bark of bargaining for furs. Light comes from tallow lamps that gutter at odd angles, throwing everyone into pockets of gold and shadow. Behind the bar there’s a wide bench scarred by hatchets and pipe burns; pelts drape the rafters like a forest canopy. Trappers in greasy cloaks compare snares and brag about the one that got away while a broker with a ledger counts tags by the stove. Newcomers are sized in seconds—hands, teeth, eyes—before someone slaps a mug into theirs and calls for a round.
A warped wooden sled hung by a frayed rope; iron buckles welded into a crude snow-rune. The paint is flaking, and a smear of dried grease half-obscures the carved image of a running marten.

Trapper's Thaw
4 cpA flaming mix of ale and spruce spirit set briefly alight; it numbs the teeth and steadies hands—drinkers get advantage on their next Survival check to track or read signs within the hour (one use, visible soot on the lips).
Poor (5e lifestyle: about 2 sp a day)
Hett the Stir-Vessel · cook
A broad-shouldered halfling who insists every stew gets an extra scoop of rendered fat 'for the cold' and never lets a pelt go to waste.
Fen Roughstep · barmaid
A quick-tongued half-elf who weaves trade gossip into ale pours and can lift a coin purse without you noticing.
Bronn Kess · bouncer
A broad northerner with a missing front tooth who breaks up fights by picking the loudest combatant up and setting them outside until they thaw.
Henrik Tull
A lean trapper always nursing a chipped mug and hunting for word of a newly opened line of marten traps—he's missing a pack of marked pelts and wants them back.
Maud Redfen
A sharp-eyed fur broker who prices pelts by the tick of her pen and keeps a ledger of regional buyers; she'll pay handsomely for prime sables but distrusts Garrik's 'side deals.'
Old Jorren
A retired marshal who gossips about road gangs and keeps a list of names he wants to see questioned; his cane hides an old service medallion that opens doors to few friends.
1
A crate of scarred sables stamped with Oldmark sigils vanished from the river landing two nights ago; Henrik Tull swears he saw men in blue coats hauling something past the Floodbridge.
2
A band calling themselves Rook's Teeth has been holding a trapline south of Blackfen Hollow and demanding tribute from trappers—Old Jorren wants proof of their lair to bring charges.
3
An out-of-towner named Ivar Koss showed up with a sewn fur bundle that bore the merchant mark of Maud Redfen's trade house; Maud says the mark's ink is a forgery and will pay for the true origin.
