The Salted Logbook

the inn at the end of the harbour wall

Perched on the bulwark where the quay falls into open water, the Salted Logbook smells of warmed tar, lemon oil and bread. Inside, low beams and shaded lanterns throw amber pools across wet-wood tables; the bar is a smoothed plank carved from a ship's stern, its counters peppered with salt crystals. Conversation is quiet and easy — men and women with callused hands and wrapped scarves trade navigational gossip and the latest weathered charts while gulls cry beyond the windows. The room favors small nooks over a single great hall: a bench beneath a map-studded wall, a hearth with drying lines of oilskins, a shelf of battered logs whose covers are pinned with notes and odd tokens. Musicians are rare; instead you hear the clack of a deckhand sharpening a knife, the splash of a moored boat against the stones and the occasional mournful tune hummed by the keeper as he polishes the brass lens behind the bar. Newcomers notice a narrow stair that climbs toward the lighthouse lantern — it is kept locked, but its key rests in a carved wooden box behind the bar.

Over the door

A weather-blackened wooden board suspends a brass lantern and a curled seafarer's logbook tied with twine; the lantern's glass is clouded, the quill in the book points seaward. No words, only the pair of objects.

The keeper

Mirk Dalben

Human

Manner

Mirk runs the tavern with the patient precision of a tide chart: hospitable and taciturn, he remembers faces for years and lets customers set their own pace. He offers a sharp, practical kindness — a dry bed, a steaming meal, and a quiet ear for any ship's tale if you earn it.

Quirk

He taps a small mother-of-pearl shell twice on the bar before pouring any drink, and often hums an odd two-note rhythm while working.

Stats

Use Commoner stat block; carries a brass spyglass (functions as a non-magical spyglass) and an iron-studded cudgel behind the bar.
House special

Lantern-Tide Toddy

5 sp

A hot mix of spiced rum, lemon, and a splash of kelp syrup; it warms the chest and steadies the head, granting an extra 1 minute of steady hands (advantage on a single Dexterity check to tie knots or handle fragile gear).

Regulars

Old Captain Horun

A one-eyed coaster captain who mutters about the Marrowstone and has been trying to raise a single sealed chest 'for reasons of honor' for three years.

Grete of the Slip

A slipmaster who keeps ledgers of the harbour's oddities and would pay handsomely for a reliable underwater compass.

Pip the Tallyboy

A skinny courier who delivers mysterious parcels to the lighthouse and is always looking for quick coin and a fast friend.

Rumours
  1. 1

Old Captain Horun swears the wrecked coaster Marrowstone holds a chest marked with a whale sigil and gives directions to its mast — he's been trying to raise it with chains for years.

  2. 2

Grete of the Slip offers coin for anyone who can bring her a brass compass carved with a fish motif said to point toward 'what the sea remembers' — last seen in the hands of a diver named Jori Tidefall.

  3. 3

Pip the Tallyboy claims he saw a lantern-light bobbing at the bottom of the eastern slip and that Mirk once rowed out with a rope and didn't come back with empty hands.

Look out for
A locked stair up toward the lighthouse lantern whose key is kept in a carved wooden box behind the bar (Mirk controls access).A shelf of traded ship-logs and pinned maps; patrons may add notes or swap charts — making this the best place to gather local nautical intelligence.
