The Lantern Between
the midnight refuge for the city-wronged
The Lantern Between appears only after the hour has swallowed the rest of the streetlights. Step through the narrow doorway and the city noise snaps muffled behind you: a warm, honeyed light, the quiet clink of glass, and a low hum of hushed conversation that seems to acknowledge strangers as lost companions. The air smells of quince preserves, pipe tobacco, and a trace of ozone from rain earlier in the night. Shadows bend oddly in the corners, and the windows look out onto alleys that refuse to match any map. Patrons sit in close booths, half-lit by tiny candles trapped in bottles; the barkeep moves with a deliberate calm, as if she’s been expecting you since dusk.
A soot-dark iron lantern hangs from a crooked bracket; its glass is cloudy but a small, steady flame glows within. No words are painted — just a braided seam of copper wire wound around the handle like a question mark.

Lantern's Linger
5 spA warming blend of spiced wine, pear, and a whisper of absinthe; the first sip calms frayed nerves and grants the drinker +1 to Wisdom (Perception) for 1 hour as the shadows seem to explain themselves.
Comfortable (5e lifestyle: about 2 gp a day)
Tamsi Reed · barmaid
She glides through the tables with a tray of cups and a gaze that misses nothing; she slips notes into guests' hands when Miriok asks.
Huck Brine · cook
A gruff ex-sailor who seasons everything with a pinch of sea salt and a graveyard story.
Garrin Holt
A gaunt cartographer who comes every few nights, tracing imagined canals on greasepaper and asking whether anyone remembers streets that used to exist.
Nora the Locksmith
A wiry woman who repairs spoons and picks locks in equal measure; she comes for the Lantern’s anonymity and scouts attendees for doors worth opening.
Brother Jeb
A former watchman turned lamplighter who collects rumors about missing street signs and speaks of a bell that rings when the city lies.
1
Garrin Holt claims he found a narrow canal under the Third Ward that appears on no chart; he wants someone to descend the old pumphouses at low tide and recover an iron wheel stamped with a city crest.
2
Nora the Locksmith is whispering about a brass bell hidden behind the statue of Governor Marrek that rings on its own when a lost person is nearby; she wants a team to pry open the statue’s base and see who — or what — pulls the cord.
3
Brother Jeb swears a lamp-post on Wren Street flickered and then pointed down an alley where a door wasn't there before; an old namesake plaque fell into his hands and bore the name 'M. Fen' in the same hand as Miriok's ledger.
