The Last Denarii
the trading-post at the edge of empire's dust
You push through a beaded curtain into a long, low room lit by oil lamps and a single barred window facing the road. The air smells of horse sweat, lemon rind, and spiced preserved meat; packets of tobacco and jarred herbs line a shelf behind the bar. Travelers hunch over chipped wooden tables, trading maps and gossip in low voices while the lamplight catches bright, unfamiliar coins that sometimes change hands with astonishing silence. Against the far wall a narrow ledger sits under a glass dome and the counter is built from the nailed-together planks of old wagons; nailed graffiti and foreign coin-slivers are embedded in it like fossils. A silent stranger sits at the corner table, wrapped in a travel cloak and counting pale, square coins stamped with the sigil of a fallen dynasty. Heads turn when the stranger pays; everyone pretends not to watch, but the room tightens as if the coin-light has made a secret visible.
A weathered iron medallion hangs over the door: a stamped coin pierced by a nail. The medallion's rim is worn smooth and the ancient script is half-obscured by soot and silver paint; someone has hammered small coin-chips into the border until they glint in the sun.

Coinflicker
5 spA hot, bittersweet concoction poured over a sliver of metallic spice; it warms the chest and leaves a faint metallic aftertaste that seems to sharpen memory for an hour (advantage on History checks about coinage or old empires once while under its effect).

Old Merek
A retired cartographer who claims he once drew the coastlines of the fallen empire and longs for the third key he lost at the mouth of the Kellen river.
Suto the Broker
A thin-eyed trader who buys antiquities and will pay well for any coin bearing the imperial sigil; he wants them quiet and whole.
Lan the Farrier
A taciturn horse-man who ferries goods to Hestyr and has noticed troops searching the border roads at night.
1
The ruined vault beneath Hestyr once held the imperial registrar; Merek says a map fragment points to its sealed gate.
2
Suto the Broker has been buying pale imperial coins for a hooded buyer who camps at the northern ford every third night.
3
Lan the Farrier reports a patrol from Commander Kavell searching caravans for a woman with a ledger — they believe it lists names and hidden claims.
