Last Minted Promise

the trading-post where old coin whispers

You push through a wind-thrown canvas and step into a low-ceilinged trading post that smells of smoked pork, oiled leather and an undercurrent of old metal. Lamps glow with steady beeswax light; traders in travel-stiffened wool swap quiet, careful talk near the map table while a faded ledger hangs open on a pegboard full of clipped receipts. Coins clink often here—some ordinary, some with faces your eyes can't place—and those coins bring people who keep their voices low and their hands nearer their belts. The bar is a broad plank scarred by coin strikes and candle wax. Behind it, shelves hold jars of preserved roots, coils of cured fish, and a neat stack of ancient coins in a locked wooden box. A single chair at the far end is always occupied by a silent man who pays with small hammered disks no one else seems able to read; when he leaves, the room shifts as if collective breath were finally allowed. The light and talk feel purposeful rather than cheerful: this is a place of trades, secrets, and ledgers that count more than stories.

Over the door

A weathered bronze disc split down the middle, the two halves held together with a leather thong; an unfamiliar crown and eight-spoked star are stamped into it and the edges are dark with coal soot.

The keeper

Brenn Hest

Human

Manner

Brenn runs the post with the watchful patience of someone who has priced risk as often as wares; he'll listen to rumors without encouraging them and trades favors for confidentiality. He treats newcomers with a neutral courtesy but remembers debts and slights with an accountant's eye.

Quirk

He rubs the rim of his coin-box with the same rag each evening while muttering a phrase in a dead tongue whenever new metal is added.

Stats

Use Veteran stat block; AC 15 (studded leather), carries a serviceable hunting spear behind the bar and the locked coin crate is trapped (poison needle, save DC 13).
House special

Varrun Dust

5 sp

A syrupy mix of boiled honey, blackened juniper, and a pinch of ground silverleaf; it warms the chest and steels the tongue—drinkers feel braver for an hour and gain advantage on one Deception or Persuasion check before the effect fades.

Staff

Eben Tull · cook

A barrel-chested ex-merchant who seasons stews with cheap brandy and a surprising hand for barter.

Hett Marr · barmaid

Quick with a tankard and quicker with her eyes — notes faces and coin marks in a small stitched book she keeps beneath her apron.

Rold Fen · stablehand

A lanky youth who smells of stable hay and tells taller tales than the travelers who sleep in his stalls.

Regulars

Kord Vale

A silent, coal-eyed man who always pays with hammered Varrun coins and watches the doorway as if waiting for a signal.

Captain Joryn Sleet

A grizzled caravan leader seeking guards to escort a crate bound for Fort Evening—offers coin or barter depending on the risk.

Mara Quickbind

A mapmaker who trades route knowledge for rare metal samples and is obsessed with cataloging every unfamiliar coin she sees.

Rumours
  1. 1

The House of Varrun once minted a coin that doubles as a key—Captain Joryn says a trader near Fort Evening sold a shard of such a key to a priest in Brant's Hollow.

  2. 2

An old map in Mara Quickbind's possession points to a collapsed granary outside Fort Evening where someone swore they found a chest stamped with the same crown as the coins Brenn keeps.

  3. 3

The Quietguilder named Sereth of Greybar is assembling men to take a wagon east; he pays in Varrun currency and promises passage to anyone who can prove they can read the old mint marks.

Look out for
A brass counter-scale behind the bar engraved with symbols; when a Varrun coin is weighed the scale's needle rattles and a hidden drawer ejects a scrap of stamped paper.A trade ledger pinned to the wall lists odd currencies and the initials of buyers — a GM can use it to trace who recently bought or sold Varrun coin.A battered map table with a removable cloth; beneath are route annotations and a crudely painted symbol matching the sign's eight-spoked star.
