Morrgule
Shadowfell Slaver
A Morrgule is a bloated knot of living shadow and pallid flesh, dragged from the Shadowfell and bound to mortal cultists with iron-thin chains of umbral will. It lurches with too-many-jointed limbs and a maw that leaks ink-black ichor; where its face should be there is only a hollow, pulsing void that hungrily seeks the warmth of a living heart. In battle cultists drive the Morrgule forward, watching with fevered delight as it drains the strength and hope from armored warriors while shrugging off strikes that would fell ordinary beasts.

Multiattack. The morrgule makes three attacks: two Claw attacks and one Bite attack.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (2d10+4) slashing damage.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8+4) piercing damage.
Shadow Siphon (Recharge 5-6). The morrgule exhales a wave of cold shadow in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 14 Constitution saving throw, taking 21 (6d6) necrotic damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. The morrgule regains hit points equal to half the necrotic damage dealt to creatures.
Umbral Slip. When the morrgule is targeted by an attack, it can use its reaction to become insubstantial until the end of the triggering attack, imposing disadvantage on that attack roll. The morrgule can use this reaction three times, and regains all uses at the start of its turn.
Most scholars of the Shadowfell trace the Morrgule to bartered bargains and broken promises: a creature born when despair in the Borderlands congealed and found a voice. Shadowfell cultists—particularly a clandestine sect calling themselves the Nightbind Hand—learned how to snare those wandering nodes of gathered sorrow and bind them in ritual fetters of iron and ash. The resulting horrors are not born of clerical sanctity but of exploitation; cultists graft collars of runed obsidian into the creature's chest, forcing the Morrgule to obey through pain and a constant whispering compulsion. Morrgules lair where the Veil between worlds thins: ruined keeps, collapsed abbeys, and the long forgotten sluice-ways beneath old cities. They feed on life not for hunger but for the warmth and clarity it leaves behind—consuming vitality, not flesh. Legends tell of the scholar Edran Vossun (of the University of Hallowreach) who survived a Morrgule's maiden attack and described it in a pamphlet later banned by several city guilds; the Nightbind Hand considers his pamphlet a cursed thing and has tried repeatedly to recover and destroy every copy.
A Morrgule stands roughly as tall as a two-story doorway when fully upright, but its body is a mass of loose joints and sagging flaps of pale, rotten skin stitched over a core of shifting shadow. Where shoulders should be are long, elbowed limbs ending in four wicked, clawed fingers stained black. Its chest is a cavernous depression rimmed by sinuous tendrils of shadow; thin chains of inlaid iron and rune-cut obsidian pierce that cavity and run down its arms and ribs, pulsing when the cultists chant. The head is flattened and featureless except for a vertical maw, rimmed with needle teeth and emitting a faint inner glow like starlight seen through a bruise. Flesh is mottled grey and slick with a reflective, oily residue; shadow seems to soak into the ground around it. Small wisps of vapory darkness constantly leak from the seams where its skin meets shadow, curling like smoke.
