Korvethine

Chaos-Eyed Prowler

A low, heavy-set mammal with eight unsettling eyes scattered across its skull, the Korvethine moves with the deliberate cunning of a crow and the brute appetite of a predator. Its pigment-cup magic eyes glow faintly and never close, cataloguing spells and enchantments as the creature stalks in small, cooperative packs; anywhere else along its head a shifting constellation of slit, thermal and dark pupils can be clicked on or off, letting the beast tune itself to the night, underground warrens, or sun-baked scrub. It hunts by scent and heat more than sound, rips prey with a razor tongue and hooked bite, and tears with padded forepaws tipped in blunt claws — all while carrying the strange, indecipherable air of something that reads the world in many different lights at once.

Actions

Multiattack. The Korvethine makes two attacks: one Bite and one Claw.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d8+4) piercing damage. If the Korvethine's pigment-cup eyes are focused on the target, the attack identifies whether the target is under a magical effect and the school of that magic (no save).

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6+3) slashing damage.

Tongue Slash. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 10 ft., one creature. Hit: 5 (1d6+2) slashing damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 12 Strength saving throw or be pushed 5 ft. away and knocked off balance (disadvantage on its next attack roll).

Reactions

Flicker of Eyes. When a creature within 10 feet makes an attack roll against the Korvethine, the Korvethine can switch which non-magic eye pairs are active and impose disadvantage on that attack. The Korvethine can use this reaction once per round.

Lore

Korvethine are native to transitional habitats — marsh edges, scrub-steppe, and ruined temperate woodlands — places where thickets, talus and sunlit openings sit near one another. Packs of two to six Korvethine patrol borders between ecosystems, their eyes adapting across generations to local demands: cavern-dwelling bands have reduced simple slit eyes and broader pigment-cup lenses, while highland animals develop larger dark-sight pairs for wide views. They are omnivores and opportunists: snakes and small ungulates are preferred meals, but Korvethine will scavenge carrion, raid nests, and strip refuse from settlements. Less dangerous, stunted variants known as gutter-korvets have crept into towns and live on refuse and bone; they are smaller, more numerous, and avoided by true Korvethine packs. Scholars such as Marrek Solven of Veldrun Naturalis wrote the first thorough notes on Korvethine eye behaviour after surviving an ambush in the Fen of Dryth. Folk stories around the Gray Weave hunting-tribes treat having a Korvethine den nearby as both a blessing (snake control) and an ill omen: the beasts are famed for sniffing out enchanted relics and once removed a charm from a hunter's pouch — an act that led to the nearby shrine of Nyrron Hollow being rediscovered centuries later. Adventurers use Korvethine packs as both hazard and tool; their always-on pigment-cup eyes can reveal the presence and school of nearby magics, which clever handlers exploit, though the animals' mild susceptibility to illusion magic keeps them unpredictable.

Appearance

A Korvethine stands roughly hip-high to a human (around 3½–4 ft at the shoulder) and is long-bodied and heavy-set like a massive marten crossed with a thick-coated canid. Its coat is short, dense and coal-black with a slight oily sheen; the fur around its neck forms a low ruff. The skull is broad and flattened, allowing four pairs of eyes set asymmetrically: a forward-facing pair of omega-shaped slit eyes (the simple sight) centered over the muzzle; a lateral pair of thermal pits recessed into the temples; a slightly smaller pair of dark-adapted pupils near the rear of the skull; and between them, nearer the midline, two glossy pigment-cup eyes that sit like inked beads and faintly refract light when the creature focuses. The muzzle ends in a hook-bite and a long, blade-edge tongue used to slash; forepaws are large and padded with short, blunt-clawed digits capable of grappling and tearing. Scars and healed bite marks pock the flanks of older animals; younger gutter-korvets are leaner and scruffier with irregular teeth.
