Irixen
Chaos Beast
A low, rolling growl and a ring of eyes that blink in an artful, maddening sequence: the Irixen is a squat, heavy‑set mammal with eight independent eyes spread around its skull. One pair, cup‑pigmented and always watching, pulses faintly with arcane color as it sifts through nearby magic; the other eyes open and shut in strange combinations so the beast can tune its senses to heat, shadow, or simple sight. In a hunting pack the Irixen moves like a whetstone of motion — sudden, brutal, and coordinated — slashing with its hooked foreclaws and raking foes with a serrated, razor‑tongue that leaves ragged wounds. It favors weak or medium prey and will rip the bellies out of snakes like a connoisseur devouring a favorite dish.

Multiattack. The Irixen makes two attacks: one Bite and one Claw. If the Irixen uses its Razor‑Tongue attack instead of its Claw, it takes no penalty to the number of attacks.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (1d8+3) piercing damage. If the target is a creature wearing or carrying an active magic item or under a spell effect, the Irixen senses the presence and school of magic (as detect magic) immediately after the hit.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d6+3) slashing damage.
Razor‑Tongue. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d6+3) slashing damage, and the target takes an additional 3 (1d6) slashing damage at the start of its next turn as the tongue’s serrations aggravate the wound.
Reflexive Blink. When a visible creature within 10 feet casts an illusion spell or creates a visible illusion that would affect the Irixen, the Irixen can use its reaction to gain advantage on the next attack roll it makes before the end of its next turn (it often lunges instinctively), but it has disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight until the end of its next turn as the illusion confuses it.
The Irixen is known in borderfolk tales from salt marshes to scrub forests as the 'eight‑eyed butcher' of forgotten drainage ditches. Scholars such as Master Hestun of Marrowfell argue the creatures evolved around magical fault lines, their pigment‑cup eyes an adaptation that lets them distinguish enchanted prey — a survival trait that spread wherever stray ley currents lingered. Irixen packs will den in collapsed riverbanks, ruined watchtowers, and basalt fissures; their dens often become marked with the remnants of prey and the glitter of scraped‑off charms. Hunters who study the Irixen note a strange cultural response to illusions: the beasts are unusually suggestible to visual trickery, often hesitating or fleeing when confronted with convincing phantasms. The Order of Glass Lanterns keeps a dossier on the species after several Irixen attacked a sentry line near the Lanterns' shrine to test warding spells. Legends among snake‑folk tribes call the Irixen 'Kirr the Harvester' and credit it with thinning serpent numbers where snakes have overrun a locale; where the Irixen goes, the snake population often declines.
Artist notes: a compact, heavy‑set mammalian form roughly the size of a large wolf but thicker through the shoulders and chest, length about 5–6 feet nose to rump, standing on short, powerful limbs. Coat is coarse black fur, matted in places; skin around the eyes is bare and pigmented like tiny cup lenses. Eyes (eight total) distributed in four pairs: a front pair (simple eyes) with a distinctive double‑slit pupil shaped like an omega (Ω), a pair set slightly outward and lower on the skull (thermal/heat sensing) with a ridged brow, the always‑on pigment‑cup pair set high and central on the forehead with faint concentric rings, and a rear pair near the back of the skull (darkvision) set closer to the thermal pair. Jaws are broad with a blunt muzzle like a marten/canid mix; teeth are varied — crushing premolars and slicing carnassials. The tongue is unusually long and edged with keratinous, razor rows like the edge of a comb. Short tail, coarse whiskers, and low, muscular shoulders. Scale references: show Irixen next to a crouching human (human about shoulder height to the beast's midflank) and near a broken stone doorway to indicate heaviness.
