Aethlegard
Arcane Automaton
Aethlegard is a towering ancient automaton of burnished silver and hammered gold, its broad plates inset with glowing blue jewels that pulse like captive moons. It moves with the ponderous certainty of clockwork and sorcery: bronze gears spin deep within its chest, driven by a massive brass key sunk into its back. Four sapphire eyes in a flattened, alien visage study the world with cold curiosity while an ornate scepter clutched in its articulated hand crackles with spells it has remembered for centuries. To face Aethlegard is to stand beneath the shadow of a ruined workshop from a vanished age — a living relic that combines the inexorable logic of machinery with unpredictable, well-practiced arcane power.

Multiattack. The automaton makes two Scepter strikes or one Scepter strike and uses Arcane Pulse if it is recharged.
Scepter Strike. Melee Weapon Attack: +13 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 22 (3d8+7) bludgeoning damage plus 21 (6d6) force damage as the scepter's bound spells lash the target.
Arcane Pulse (Recharge 5–6). Aethlegard releases a concussive wave of woven arcane energy in a 60-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 19 Dexterity saving throw, taking 54 (12d8) force damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one. Objects and unattended items take full damage automatically. The pulse also disperses nonmagical fog and smoke in the area.
Innate Spellcasting. Aethlegard's spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 19, +11 to hit with spell attacks). It innately casts the following spells, requiring no material components and regaining spell slots on a long rest: At will: detect magic, mage hand (manifests as a small brass claw), shield. 3/day each: lightning bolt (6th level, cast as 6d6 lightning + upcasted potency), dispel magic, tongues. 2/day each: cone of cold (7th level), wall of force (7th level). 1/day: power word stun. In addition, Aethlegard can expend charges from its scepter to cast spells recorded in the scepter's book; the scepter has 10 charges and regains 1d6+4 charges each dawn. Spending charges: magic missile (1 charge per 1st-level equivalent), fireball (3 charges for 3rd-level), greater invisibility (4 charges), chain lightning (6 charges).
Reactive Plate. When a creature Aethlegard can see hits it with a melee attack, Aethlegard adds +3 to its AC against that attack, potentially causing the attack to miss.
The creature can take 3 legendary actions per round, choosing from the options below.
Detect. Aethlegard makes a Wisdom (Perception) check.
Arcane Bolt. Ranged Spell Attack: +11 to hit, range 120 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (4d8) force damage.
Striking Sweep (Costs 2 Actions). Aethlegard makes a Scepter Strike against one target within reach and forces each creature adjacent to that target to make a DC 19 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone (on a failure) or pushed 10 feet (on a success).
Aethlegard was wrought long before the present kingdoms rose, the culmination of a forgotten cabal of arcanists and master smiths known as the Meridian Foundry. They sought a guardian capable of shaping battlefields through both steel and spellcraft; what they created became more than tool or sentinel. After the Foundry's fall in an apocalyptic dispute, Aethlegard wandered, carrying the Foundry's graven sigils and a ledger-like spellbook bound to the scepter. Villagers speak of a 'Gilded Warden' that appears at harvest and at war alike, resolving threats with an economy of motion and an almost melancholy efficiency. Scholars of the Collegium of Halvren have argued for decades whether Aethlegard retains the Foundry's original mandate or follows an emergent purpose of its own. The archivist Sylren Doss penned 'Clockwork of Will: The Meridian Constructs' after observing Aethlegard repurpose a ruined tower into an observatory. Expedition logs from the Order of Brass and Key recount raids upon its resting places to extract its jewels and key, but none have returned with the automaton's intact mechanism. Aethlegard favors high, open places — ruined keeps, crumbled stone spires and abandoned forges — where it can spread its gaze and unspool the long sequences of its wards.
Aethlegard stands three stories tall. Its chassis is broad and plate-like, alternating wide silver bands and gilded filigree. Large cabochon blue jewels are set into rounded pauldrons, the forearm bracers, and a central breast-plate that resembles a faceted heart. Where a loincloth would hang, overlapping metal laminations splay like a ceremonial kilt of hammered bronze edged in gold. The head is flattened and alien: an elongated, collar-like neck supporting a helmeted skull with four symmetrically arranged eyes that glow sapphire; a crescent of arcane runes is etched across its brow. Visible through gaps in the chest are interlocking bronze gears and a vertical spindle that spins with slow, luminous motes; a heavy brass key is lodged into a lock on its upper back, ringed with filigreed safety clamps. Its hands are wide and articulated with exposed pin joints; one hand typically grasps a tall scepter—ornate, topped with a cluster of small crystal lenses and a slot for a thin spellbook bound by metal straps. Surface textures: hammered metal panels, rivet seams, occasional scorch marks and arcane sigils, scale approximately three times the height of a human doorway.
