Zhar'keth the Auric Horologe
Ancient Golden Automaton
Zhar'keth is an immense, gleaming engine of gold and clockwork—an ancient sentinel whose single, unblinking sapphire eye burns with cold calculation. When it awakens the ground thrums with gears and the air tastes of ozone as the blue chest-crystal thrums in time with its heart. It moves with ponderous inevitability, crushing stone and breaking shields with systematic swings of polished limbs; the thing is less a creature than a judgement dispensed by brass and rune, and those who meet its gaze feel the world rearrange itself around a single immutable law.

Multiattack. Zhar'keth makes two Slam attacks and can make one Crystal Burst or Eye Beam attack.
Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 27 (4d10+5) bludgeoning damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 21 Strength saving throw or be pushed up to 15 feet and knocked prone as brass gears whir and grapple its limbs.
Crystal Burst. Ranged Spell Attack: +11 to hit, range 120 ft., one target. Hit: 49 (8d10+5) force damage. On a hit, the target's armor or worn item takes a -1 penalty to AC (to a minimum of 0) until repaired; multiple hits stack, and this effect lasts 1 hour per stack.
Eye Beam (Recharge 5-6). Zhar'keth fires a searing beam from its sapphire eye in a 120-foot line that is 10 feet wide. Each creature in the line must make a DC 21 Dexterity saving throw, taking 55 (10d10) radiant damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one. Objects and unattended structures take full damage automatically. A creature that fails the save by 5 or more is instead paralyzed until the end of its next turn as temporal feedback stuns its motion.
Temporal Anchor (Recharge 6). Zhar'keth slams the ground, creating a 30-foot-radius field centered on itself. Creatures of the automaton's choice that start their turn in the field must succeed on a DC 21 Wisdom saving throw or have their movement speed halved and suffer a -2 penalty to attack rolls and Dexterity saving throws until they leave the field. The field lasts 1 minute or until Zhar'keth dismisses it as a bonus action.
Kinetic Parry. When a creature Zhar'keth can see attacks it with a melee attack, Zhar'keth adds +4 to its AC against that attack, potentially causing the attack to miss.
The creature can take 3 legendary actions per round, choosing from the options below.
Slam. Zhar'keth makes one Slam attack.
Pulse. Zhar'keth emits a 20-foot-radius pulse of crystalline energy. Each creature in the area must succeed on a DC 21 Constitution saving throw or take 18 (4d8) force damage and be stunned until the end of its next turn; a successful save halves the damage and prevents the stun.
Clockwork Step. Zhar'keth moves up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
Zhar'keth is reputed to be one of the last remaining Horologes—colossal artifices built during the Age of Ordinance by a coalition of architects and ritualists who sought to bind time to law. The Horologes were never common; only three are known by name in surviving tomes. Zhar'keth long ago fell silent in the crater-city of Harsun Spire, its workings sealed behind wards and a chamber of blue crystal. Legends claim it once served as a judge and executioner for a theocratic cabal called the Meridian Tribunal, enforcing decrees without mercy until the Tribunal itself fractured into rival sects. Scholars such as Archivist Vorben of the Guild of Lattice have catalogued fragments of Zhar'keth's inscriptions. Vorben theorizes the chest-crystal is a condensed chronal lattice—part battery, part calendar—that both powers the automaton and records the passage of events it deems important. Raiders and treasure-hunters pry at the outer plates; cults seek to reawaken it as a weapon. The Order of Meridian, descendants of the Tribunal's legalists, both revere and deeply fear Zhar'keth: some wish to restore its judgement, others to bury it beneath molten brass forever.
Render Zhar'keth as a gargantuan humanoid framework of beaten gold plates and interlocking brass gears. Its torso is broad and slightly elongated; plates engraved with tally marks and sigils of law overlap like the pages of a ledger. At the center of its chest sits a multifaceted blue crystal the size of a man’s torso, cut with internal facets that pulse when the construct activates. The head is helmet-like with a single, perfectly spherical azure lens set within a recessed brow; thin filigree lines radiate from the eye like clock hands. Exposed pistons, rotating cogs, and hanging chains hang in the spaces between limbs; steam vents and faint electrical arcs lick along its joints. Surface textures should vary: polished reflective panels catch light, while recessed glyphs are matte and darkened with soot. For scale, depict a human figure standing by its shin or a broken doorway barely reaching knee height. Environment hint: the ruins of a brass-clad hall, toppled pillars, and clock faces half-buried in rubble.
