Aethlegard the Arcanum Titan

Arcane Automaton

Aethlegard the Arcanum Titan strides like a moving tower of polished silver and burnished gold plate, each step setting the air humming with stored power. Blue jewels inset on its pauldrons, forearms and breast pulse like captive moons; its four alien eyes burn a cold sapphire that traces the runes etched along its plating. It wields an ancient scepter that sings with bound spells and carries a screwbound spellbook locked into a breast-cavity. Though undeniably mechanical, Aethlegard thinks and weaves sorcery as if it were a living mage, unbothered by mortal pleas and deliberate in enforcing an agenda written into its original forging.

Actions

Multiattack. The Titan makes two Scepter strikes or one Scepter strike and casts a cantrip.

Scepter Strike. Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 28 (4d8+8) bludgeoning damage plus 9 (2d8) force damage.

Arcane Barrage (Recharge 5–6). Ranged Spell Attack: +11 to hit, range 120 ft., one target. Hit: 45 (10d8) force damage. On a hit, the target must succeed on a DC 19 Strength saving throw or be pushed up to 20 feet away and knocked prone.

Spellbook Invocation. Aethlegard unfurls the chest-bound spellbook and casts one of the following spells from within it without expending slots: wall of force, chain lightning, disintegrate, teleport (self only), or meteor swarm (each usable once, regaining all uses at dawn). Spell save DC 19, +11 to hit with spell attacks.

Reactions

Reactive Shield. When hit by an attack, Aethlegard can expend a sorcery point to grant itself +6 to AC until the end of its next turn, potentially causing the attack to miss.

Legendary actions

The creature can take 3 legendary actions per round, choosing from the options below.

Cantrip. Aethlegard casts a cantrip.

Arc Lash. Aethlegard makes one Scepter Strike or fires a 30-foot line of crackling force for 14 (4d6) force damage (Dex save DC 19 for half).

Runic Step (Costs 2 Actions). Aethlegard teleports up to 60 feet to an unoccupied space it can see and may trigger a readied spell as part of this movement.

Lore

Aethlegard was wrought in the age when mortal arcanists and artificers pooled their knowledge to construct guardians for the sky-archives of the lost city of Prethos. Its frame was hammered from meteoric silver and alloyed with gilded copper; blue star-jewels were grafted to its core as both power reservoirs and seals for spells inscribed into its chassis. When Prethos fell—torn apart by a schism of spellwork and ambition—Aethlegard remained active, its orders corrupted and refined by centuries of stray magic. Ruins hunters tell of the Titan opening sealed vaults and defending them not for treasure but for the preservation of certain grim codices. Scholars argue over Aethlegard's purpose. The Conservatory of Kestilan calls it the Last Archivist and sends cautious envoys with oaths and offerings; the rune-hunter faction known as the Sundered Quills seeks to tear its jewels free. Several surviving treatises by Master-artificer Hadrus Mehlmark claim a failsafe code—'The Canticle of Return'—was meant to restore the Titan's primary directive. Few have found the Titan unhostile; more tell of ruined battalions and singed libraries. Among mountain villages, tavern-oversalt tales say the Titan sometimes wanders to ancient battlefields and reads aloud thunderous canticles that shake the very ground.

Appearance

Aethlegard is a towering gargantuan construct standing roughly 35 feet tall. Its chassis is broad-shouldered, composed of overlapping silver plates rimmed with gold filigree; the plating is abrasion-scarred and etched with tiny arcane sigils that faintly glow when it channels magic. Large oblong blue jewels are inset on each shoulder, at the center of its chest and on the outer faces of its forearms; thin veins of luminescent conduit run from these jewels into the joints and scepter socket. Where a loincloth would be, heavy articulated metal plates hang like a ceremonial apron with hammered ornamentation. Its head sits on a short armored neck and sports an alien facial plate with four slitted ocular lenses arranged in a diamond—two stacked above two—each lens burning steady sapphire light. The scepter is nearly as tall as a human, wrought from the same metals, topped by a cage enclosing a rotating crystal and bound runes; a strapped spellbook—age-darkened leather with metal clasps—retracts into a compartment at the Titan's chest. Surface textures combine polished metal, burnished filigree, and faint scorch marks; joints are thick and riveted, with steam-like curling vapors escaping from regulator vents.
