The Stern of Coin
the merchant-princes' club aboard the moored galleon
You step up a short gangplank and into a clipped hush: velvet-lined booths, lacquered teak rails, and glassware that catches the harbor light like trapped stars. The air carries salt and citrus oil, warmed by a low brazier and the wood-sweet scent of pipe smoke from the private boxes; slippers and velvet trappings muffle the footfalls of men and women who trade in fortunes rather than gossip. Port windows are open to the quay, revealing ropes, lanterns, and the hull kissing the quay — but inside the conversation is a chess match of curt smiles, ledger-scratched notes, and the quiet clink of coin handled with a careful hand.
A gilded brass compass rose inset with a single silver coin hangs above the gangplank; the metal is polished to a mirror sheen and the coin bears a smudged family crest instead of words.

Compass Rose
10 gpA heady blend of aged spirit, candied citrus, and a whisper of smoked seaweed; patrons say it steadies the hand and loosens the tongue — once, when taken in full, it grants one moment of uncanny persuasion (GM decides effect).
Wealthy (5e lifestyle: about 4 gp a day)
Pellenis Quay · barmaid
A wry half-elf who remembers prices and grudges with equal clarity and moves among booths like a shadow of scent and silk.
Borek Ironline · bouncer
A broad-shouldered ex-loadman who checks invitations against a brass ledger and hums sea shanties when an argument threatens to swell.
Garrim Halvek
A powdered-bearded spice magnate who always asks after 'the Lantern of Drypoint' and has a private key to the club's ledger chest.
Vestra Morn
A coral-eyed shipping heiress who brokers passage and occasionally hires discreet violence to settle disputed manifests.
Thrum of Sablefin
A compact gnomish financier who keeps a miniature abacus on the bar and is rumored to know which ship in the lot carries the Black Ballast.
1
The Lantern of Drypoint: Admiral Rennoc's famed lantern washed ashore with a note naming a 'black ballast' chest — Garrim Halvek wants it returned before anyone reads the ledger aboard the galleon.
2
The Black Ballast: a sealed iron chest stored in a condemned lighter tied beneath the club contains something that makes captains quarrelsome; Thrum of Sablefin says he can pinpoint which lighter for the right price.
3
The Floating Vault: an unmarked brigantine funded by the club keeps silent auctions for 'sensitive cargo' — Vestra Morn fears someone plans to steal its manifest to expose several merchant-princes' darker dealings.
