The Rooted Refrain
wine and laughter in the heartwood
The tavern occupies a hollow grown into the trunk of a massive living tree at the center of an elven market quarter. Light filters through leafy skylights, turning dust and spilled wine into motes that dance above a crowd that howls louder than polite elven society usually allows. Benches and tables curve with the grain; dancers bolt between root-pillars as minstrels improvise riffs on faintly dissonant elven tunes. The air smells of citrus-preserved venison, oak smoke, and the bright tang of sour pear wine. A bark-paneled bar rings the central space, and from it the conversations spill into a glorious, fragrant muddle — bargains, insults, bawdy songs, and the occasional barked command from a barkeep trying to keep a tavern of centuries-old tradition from falling into chaos.
A polished oval of dark heartwood, its bark rim carved into musical spirals; a brass relief of three intertwined roots hangs beneath, dull with fingerprints but kept clean. No words, only the worn grooves where palms have knocked for luck.

Refrain of the Root
2 spA bright, tart pear wine infused with crushed star-anise and a whisper of ash-smoke; it loosens tongues and makes memories of the city's old songs come easier — drinkers gain advantage on Performance checks involving local tunes for 1 hour, but struggle to recall where they first learned the tune.
Comfortable (5e lifestyle: about 2 gp a day)
Sela Vireth · barmaid
A quick-footed young elf who juggles tankards and secrets with the same grin; she never misses who owes what.
Brenn of Two Spoons · cook
A burly elven chef who mashes citrus, spice, and smoke into every dish and shouts insults that taste almost affectionate.
Korrin Slate · bouncer
A compact veteran of the tree-wardens, all knuckled hands and quiet eyes; he prefers a hard look to a harder blade.
Heshan Bitterroot
A retired caravan guard who lost his unit in the eastern quarter; he mutters about tunnels beneath the market and watches the hearth knot with a hungry stare.
Maris of the Ledger
A sharp-eyed spice merchant who buys a bottle every night and listens for who mentions Giltroot Hollow near her table.
Old Crispin
A once-famous minstrel now reduced to bawdy ditties and gossip; he remembers songs that name old wards and hidden entrances.
1
Merchant Maris of the Ledger pays extra to anyone who can show proof a tunnel from the market drains reaches Giltroot Hollow beneath the third root pillar.
2
Heshan Bitterroot claims the caravan leader Malik Verdon hid a golden ledger in the hearth knot before he vanished last month; Heshan says he knows where the knot's loose seam is.
3
A smuggler known as Sootwheel uses the old sewer-roots to move contraband; a map with his routes was seen briefly at the Drowned Lantern tavern last week.
