The Lantern at the Turning
an inn that wakes at a different crossroad by dawn
You find the Lantern at the Turning at a patch of road that was not there when you walked the last mile: a single low building of rough timber and blackened stone, its windows glowing amber behind curtains that breathe as if with a living thing. Inside, the common room smells of woodsmoke, cider, and a faint tang like ozone; the light pools oddly, making travelers' faces look a shade off, as if someone has tinted them with memory. The clientele is an odd, muffled assembly—cartographers tracing paper maps with trembling fingers, a boot-worn courier who checks a brass pocket-odometer every ten minutes, and a quiet pair who always sit with their backs to the door and never speak a name.
A soot-dark iron lantern hung from a crooked post; the glass panes show a hand-etched compass rose that faintly shifts each time you blink. The metal is pitted, the flame inside never gutters, and a single carved rune on the base wears like a thumbprint.

Stats
Lantern's Turn
5 spA warm amber cordial steeped with preserved starwort: one sip clarifies a single direction in the drinker's mind (advantage on survival/navigation checks for 1 hour), but leaves them briefly nostalgic for a place they did not visit.

Hesti Bramble · cook
A squat, soot-freckled woman who sings recipe rhymes while ladling thick barley stew in precise rhythms.
Rook · barmaid
A wiry tiefling who moves like a shadow, delivering mugs and listening with an unnervingly patient smile.
Garr of the Hitch · stablehand
An enormous, soft-spoken man who tends mounts and mutters to the road as if it were an old hound.
Mirrek Fold
A meticulous halfling cartographer who buys tomorrow's map-ink by the ounce and trades hints for locks of hair or coin.
Jorun Milekeeper
An ex-roadwatcher who now measures stones for a living and nags anyone who sleeps through the chime of the lantern-bell.
Ellis of the Sixpence Run
A courier forever short on coin who claims to have once delivered a letter to the inn's yesterday then missed the rest of the week.
1
The Withered Oak milemarker three leagues east reportedly frames a painted signpost that points to a traveler's truest home—Jorun says it only shows when the Lantern at the Turning has been in place for seven nights.
2
Mirrek Fold claims there's a hidden map-seller in the market of Greyford who sells one-use charts that pin the inn to a chosen crossroad for a single dawn; he wants a sample of the Wayward Ledger to make a permanent copy.
3
A brass codex called the Wayward Ledger was last seen with Bramor's sister, Sella Quill, who vanished the month the inn first started moving; a collector named Verren Kest is offering a small fortune for any page that names the inn's next waking-place.
