The Jubilee Pick

the saloon where the first silver sleeps

Lanterns strung from rafter to rafter throw warm circles of light over a floor scuffed by boots and pickaxes. Laughter, stomping feet and a brass band in the corner compete with the metallic clink of coin and the occasional cheer as someone buys a round for a new claim. The air smells of spiced stew, smoke, wet wool and the thin metallic trace of silver that seems to cling to everyone's hands. Miners swap tall tales at long tables while a makeshift stage hosts a fiddler and a storyteller — everyone keen to celebrate the strike that turned a dusty outpost into a boomtown overnight.

Over the door

A battered iron pick crossed with a silver ingot, painted on a wooden board; soot-streaked, the paint chipped but the ingot still gleams in a hint of silver leaf

The keeper

Bram Ironwright

Dwarf

Manner

Bram runs the saloon with booming hospitality: he remembers names, calls last drinks with a theatrical bellow, and keeps disputes off the densest tables. He is loyal to his regulars and quick to cut a free bowl of stew for a miner arriving cold and empty-handed.

Quirk

Bram taps his tankard twice on the bar before serving anyone whose boots still have fresh earth on them.

Stats

Use the Dwarf Commoner stats; AC 12 (sturdy mail), wields a heavy cudgel hidden beneath the bar.
House special

Mother Lode Toddy

5 sp

A hot blend of whiskey, orange rind and a pinch of crushed silver-scented herb — one sip warms the hands and sharpens the eyes; miners claim it steadies a nervous hand for ten minutes.

Staff

Tamsin Rook · barmaid

Fast with a tray, faster with gossip; she knows who bought which claim and who slept in whose tent last night.

Gahr the Oven · cook

A squat, soot-faced halfling who keeps the stew pot boiling and uses a miner's compass as a spoon.

Kelda Broadshield · bouncer

A retired mercenary who sizes up trouble in a slow, careful stare and prefers her fists to lawbooks.

Regulars

Old Nett

A gaunt prospector who claims she found the vein and gnaws on a scrap map she swears will lead back to the mother lode.

Fiddle-Marn

A garrulous human fiddler who double-checks every newcomer for a coin or a story to trade for his songs.

Surveyor Iddo Venn

A hammer-and-chain surveyor who catalogs new claims for a distant consortium and quietly looks for discrepancies in Bram's ledgers.

Rumours
  1. 1

Hest Underbrow, a traveling assayer, vanished two nights ago carrying a small iron ledger that reportedly names the richest seams and the owners; his last lodging was at a tent near the lower shaft.

  2. 2

The Hollow Vein — the new shaft three miles east — starts to sing at midnight; miners who listen swear the sound points toward an old, sealed tunnel full of vein-rich ore.

  3. 3

A claim-buyer named Edran Kettle arrived with a chest of blank deeds and a roster of hired men; he's offering townsfolk 'fast coin' to sell their stakes before an auction next week.

Look out for
A raised stage where new claim owners are toasted each evening — the crowd decides with a coin toss who gets the next free drink.A trapdoor behind the bar giving access to a dirt-floored cellar where Bram keeps the real ledger and some crates of 'reserved' ore samples.
