The Founders' Stoup

the alehouse at the mine's end

You push past a corrugated stone lintel and down three steps into a vaulted chamber that smells of hot grain, tallow, and wet stone. Strings of lanterns—paper replaced by mica thin as a coin—swing overhead, casting dancers of light over long trestle tables crowded with miners in patched leather, families, and a few traveling merchants. Laughter bumps against the low ceiling; a hammered drum and a squeezebox keep a steady, foot-stomping reel. Kegs are rolled along channels in the floor, and the bar is a slab of native granite streaked with iron ore and carved with initials from generations of Founders' Day revelers. Behind the bar, an altar of sorts holds battered portraits of the mine's founders and a short, sealed iron horn displayed beneath glass. The crowd presses close when the keeper raises a tankard for the traditional founder's toast; strangers are made welcome with a clap on the shoulder and a brass coin to try the house ale. Despite the noise, there's a precise order to the chaos: a miner will fetch your room key if you ask, a barmaid can read ore dust from your sleeves, and the laughter always rises like steam from a furnace.

Over the door

A heavy iron tankard beaten flat and hung from a rusted chain; the tankard bears a chipped bronze rune of the mine's founding clan, and a smudge of soot forever marks the rim where torches have licked it.

The keeper

Borin Stonehand

Dwarf

Manner

Borin runs the house with the punctuality of a clockwork bell; he expects respect for the founders' rites and repays it with fierce hospitality and a dry, thundering laugh. He tolerates rough speech and rougher song but will strip a drunk's boots at the door and set them by the hearth with more care than some keepers give their silverware.

Quirk

Borin taps three times on the bar whenever a new stranger orders their first drink—an old signal to 'mark' newcomers for the annual founders' blessing.

Stats

Use the Veteran stat block; AC 17 (scale), wields a dwarven waraxe at the bar and keeps the First Call's key on a chain under his tunic.

Founders' Fuse

5 sp

A stiff spiced ale fortified with a shot of cavebrand and a pinch of mineral salt that warms the chest and blurs the edges of memory for an hour—drinkers feel braver and more nostalgic, gaining advantage on Performance checks involving dwarven songs for 1 hour but suffering a -1 penalty to Perception while the warmth lingers.

Staff

Mira Coalbraid · barmaid

A quick-footed half-elf who knows everyone's tab and which miner owes a favour to whom.

Grunhild the Kettle · cook

A broad-shouldered dwarf who ladles smoked root stew from a cauldron the size of a shield and slams down a bowl with a wink.

Tess Stonerim · bouncer

Regulars

Harrow 'Blackscraper' Denm

A grizzled foreman who wants a clean ledger and a certain blasted seam reopened for a final strike of ore.

Fenna Ornsdot

An elderly singer who remembers the exact words the founders spoke and hums the tune that calls the First Call's horn.

Talik Greymantle

A young scribe buying drinks to earn people's stories—he's secretly copying a map he says leads to a sealed shaft below the third vein.

Rumours
  1. 1

Harrow Denm claims the Red Vein at Shaft Three sings again and a lanternbearer named Old Joric swears the seam hides a crystalline door.

  2. 2

Fenna Ornsdot hums that the founders' horn—the First Call—was never meant to summon miners but to wake something beneath the sealed chamber called the Hollow Vault.

  3. 3

Talik Greymantle shows a penciled map pointing to 'Iron Gate B', a rusted hatch three levels down that a contractor called Merek Farrow paid to keep closed.

Look out for
Founders' Wall: portraits of the founding crew with iron hooks; one portrait swings open to a shallow safe when pressed.Tunneled Cellar: a ladder behind the bar drops to a damp barrel room and a sealed shaft hatch; opening it requires a torque of three dwarven turns (DC 15 Strength or a lever).
