The Brass Lantern Echo
the road's midnight festival
Warm lantern glow and the tang of spiced cider meet the road's chill as you push through the swinging door. Strings of colored fabric and paper lanterns crisscross the low ceiling; laughter, clinking tankards and the rasp of a fiddler fill the common room. Traveling merchants trade tall stories at the bar while children dart between legs, balancing small lanterns they were given on the house. The floor smells of roasting meat, beeswax smoke, and pipeleaf; benches and mismatched chairs form impromptu stages where anyone can sing, trade a trick, or step up for a duel of jokes.
A battered brass lantern hung from a wrought-iron hoop; soot-blackened, its glass cracked and inlaid with a tiny mirror. A faint scorched ring stains the wood above the door; no lettering, only the lantern's silhouette swinging in the wind.

Lanternfire Sling
5 spA warm, glowing mix of spiced cider and a splash of brandy set briefly aflame and doused with citrus; it leaves the drinker flushed and garrulous — stories told within an hour of drinking gain a little color and the drinker has advantage on Performance checks to entertain.

Old Miren
A stooped ex-minstrel who claims to know the true name of a famous roadside lantern and hums an old tune whenever the brass light is lit.
Sister Joss
A cheerful traveling apothecary who sells festival charms and looks nervous whenever anyone mentions 'the northern ruins.'
1
The northern marsh holds a ruined waystone called the Mirror of Miren; Old Miren says its twin set was split and one half is lodged inside a brass lantern carried by Brenn Hout.
2
Vern Korr warns that Sunder's Cart, a merchant train that passes this road each fortnight, was ambushed near Black Span Bridge last week — the survivors radio that the attackers left behind odd paper flags with a black seed drawn on them.
3
Sister Joss is asking discreetly for help: a minstrel called Silk-finger Rook vanished after a gig here, leaving a sealed leather pouch under the stage that thrums faintly when the Brass Lantern Echo is lit.
