The Brass Bell Pilgrim
the inn at the bend before Saint Halan's wayside
Lanterns and pennants ripple from rafters and pegged posts, the air thick with roasted spice, baking apples and the sweet smoke of mulled wine. Pilgrims in patched but carefully mended habits cluster at long tables, trading badges and short prayers between bites; a fiddler tugs at a buoyant tune beside a framed reliquary image. Light from the hearth paints everyone's cheeks gold while brass bells and laughter punctuate the steady click of travelers loading or unloading packbeasts outside. A new arrival feels noticed but not crowded—servers with aproned smiles press warm platters and tankards into hands while the innkeeper moves like a conductor, cueing a toast or drawing a curtsey to an older pilgrim. In corners, whispered bargains and the rustle of maps promise roads still to walk once the feast ends.
A hammered brass bell swung in a wrought-iron frame, polished bright though dented from centuries of use; beneath it a faded cloth ribbon bears a stitched scallop shell and the words 'Rest and Light' in a hand too steady to be accidental.

Saint's Lantern
5 spA hot cup of red wine steeped with clove, orange peel and a sliver of preserved ginger; it steadies the nerves, granting a calm edge to prayer or a steady hand in the dark for the next hour (advantage on Wisdom (Religion) checks relating to simple devotions while the cup lasts).

1
The shrine's silver reliquary, the Heart of Halan, disappeared three nights ago; Brother Riven of Lestwood swears he saw a cloaked figure with a carved shell talisman head toward the river ford.
2
Sister Maren says a stitched map to a secret spring and a hidden chapel is sewn into the lining of a pilgrim cloak held by a dealer named 'Low Joss' who trades badges in the east market.
3
Tomas Reed whispers that a small band calling themselves the Night Offering collects pledged coins at the shrine and buries them beneath a leaning milestone on the south road — the pile is said to mark a cache someone is hunting.
