Final Roll Call

the fort canteen where the garrison still answers

The canteen sits inside the ruined outer wall of an abandoned frontier redoubt. Lantern light fights with fog that creeps in from the trench; every table is scarred with initials and tally marks. The air smells of boiled stew and gun oil; faintly under that is the metallic tang of old blood. Voices rise in half-remembered cadence when the wind shifts—snatches of roll call, an absent corporal's cough—and patrons glance toward the wall-mounted brass tablet as if expecting a missing name to answer back. Wooden benches groan like tired bunkbeds; a low iron stove breathes warmth into a room that refuses to believe the war is over.

Over the door

A weathered iron plaque hangs over the door: a bugle carved in low relief, green patina in its creases; no words, only a single drilled hole where a rivet once held a brass nameplate.

The keeper

Magdun Havel

human

Manner

Magdun runs the canteen with the measured discipline of a quartermaster and the weary patience of a man who has counted too many funerals. He treats strangers with curt courtesy and veterans with a private tenderness that shows in how he polishes certain brass fixtures.

Quirk

At precisely dusk he taps the brass bugle stub on the bar three times and mumbles a number—the roll for the night—no matter who is standing there.

Stats

Use the Veteran stat block; AC 12 (studded leather), carries a cutlass behind the counter and keeps the service bugle within reach.
House special

Bugler's Swill

4 cp

A bitter mix of dark ale and a slug of rum served in an iron cup; veterans say it sharpens the memory of orders and eases the sleep between watches. One mug steadies hands; two leaves a lingering taste of brass and the sensation of being watched by unseen sentries.

Greta Sunhook · cook

A former supply sergeant who stretches beans into meals and knows the map of every foraging route within ten miles.

Ivor Kest · barmaid

Loud-voiced, square-shouldered, and quick with a mug—he takes coin without questions and will slide a secret across the counter for the right price.

Regulars

Sergeant Jor Mend

An amputee veteran who claims he once led the midnight patrol that held the line at Hollow Ford and wants his old squad's ledger recovered from the guardroom.

Tess of Broken Pike

A caravan scout who sleeps with a folding crowbar and is hunting a map that shows a hidden supply shaft under the redoubt.

Molly Reed

A nervous clerk who reads the brass tablet every night and insists one name is scratched out recently by human hands.

Rumours
  1. 1

Corporal Derren's bugle — an officer buried beneath the south tower left a brass bugle that still plays when wind runs through its bell; some say it calls the dead.

  2. 2

The Guardroom Ledger — a bound ledger with names and pay records was hidden in a bricked nook under the mess hall after the last muster and contains a penciled note leading to 'the lost ration cache'.

  3. 3

The Hollow Ford sentry post — Tess swears there is a collapsed tunnel under the ford that opens into a sealed storeroom; the last man who entered never returned and his watch key is now missing.

Look out for
Midnight Muster: at 00:00 the keeper rings a shallow bell and reads names from the brass tablet; characters who answer get a minor advantage on resting (DM's call).Brass Tablet: a wall plaque lists the dead and missing; touching a name sometimes triggers a whisper or vision (use as a short flashback mechanic).
