Chalkline Rest
the inn where the border is a chalk stroke on the floor
A long, low room split down the middle by a white chalk line so bright it seems to hum with attention. On either side, militia men and women sit with weapons leaned within reach, eyes flicking to the line rather than each other. The air is thick with smoke, sweat, and the tang of pickled onions; the floorboards are scarred and sticky from spilled ale. Lantern light pools over stained tables; from the hearth comes the steady clatter of a metal pan and a running low argument that never quite becomes a fight. Newcomers are sized, not welcomed—then measured for value, threat, or coin.
A weathered iron loop holds a cracked wooden plaque painted with a single white stroke across a black field; the paint is flaking and someone has daubed a small red handprint on the lower corner.

Stats
Borderline Bitter
1 spA double measure of nettle spirit mixed with a bittering root and a pinch of chalk dust for show—sharp, warming, and leaves a faint white line on your lips; taking one lowers your guard by making you just chatty enough to reveal a scrap of information (GM may ask for a Wisdom save to avoid blurting a minor secret).
Poor (5e lifestyle: about 2 sp a day)
Jorin Quick · barmaid
A broad-shouldered woman who moves between sides with mugs and a ready smile, listening for names to trade to Merek later.
Bram of Low-Gate · bouncer
A scarred ex-militia who stands in the doorway and quietly enforces the chalk line with the point of his boot.
Old Tamm · cook
A grizzled dwarf who swears the stew would taste better if half the customers took off their boots first.
Captain Rul Fen
Leader of the northern levy, always counting new faces and looking for men to press into a night patrol.
Sereth Vann
Commander of the southern militia; she pays in silver and questions anyone who keeps too many secrets.
Tib the Courier
A lanky rider who delivers packets between the lines and sometimes pockets letters for later sale to Merek.
1
The old boundary stone east of the road hides a sealed pipe leading to a ruined watchpost; a grubby map with the pipe marked is said to be in Merek's stash under the bar.
2
Captain Rul Fen is quietly recruiting a covert patrol to seize the southern militia's watchtower at first light; he is paying men in advance and names are on a ledger kept at his table.
3
A woman called Mother Grit, a hedge-witch from the scrublands, has enchanted the chalk line so that anyone who crosses it under the moon will carry a day's worth of bad luck—she commands a small gang who want payment to remove the curse.
